MY wife and I will be spending a few days in Detroit this summer. She said I should take some fishing gear. MY question is, how is the fishing in the Detroit River. If not the river someplace near by. Also, what should be my target fish. I'm not taking a boat so I would be bank fishing.

Check out Buck fishes on you tube papa jack. I just typed in bank fishing Detroit river. It looks like he's fishing at a park below a bridge đź‘Ť

I recommend Belle isle and far as target it depends on what you like to fish

It's currently walleye time on the Detroit River. I fish all along the river from Alter Rd (S. of Jefferson) downriver to Trenton. There are many spots. In the downtown area, anywhere on the Riverwalk downriver to Riverside park below the Ambassador bridge. Further downriver in Wyandotte is Elizabeth Park. About 5-10 minutes downriver from Elizabeth Park is the Detroit River Wildlife Refuge in Trenton. There is a 700' pier there which is a very good spot. For walleye, I'd suggest after dark to just after sunup being the best time but you can do well during the day also.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the location information. What's the type of baits to use from shore?

Various sizes and colors of jigs.
Walleye's taste seems to change every day so be sure to have a variety of colors.
I'd suggest small, 1oz jig heads. I was told yesterday that "pimp daddy" jigs are getting a lot of hits right now.

We hit the shore yesterday and today (April 8) and people were hitting all over at the fishing peer south of Trenton. My son caught his first two keepers in two hours. We were there mid afternoon until after dark on Friday and saw a lot caught. We just spent a couple hours there on Saturday when he caught his two. It was shoulder to shoulder so we left. Now that I know where and how I'll take the boat down and hopefully avoid having people breathing down my neck.

buck fishes is on the canadian side. shore fishing seems to be more successful on that side. yes, belle isle is a good idea. the water there has been cleaned up with the entry of river water into the lagoons. the lagoons have bluegills and largemouth bass. the one at the upstream end of belle isle, the largest one, looks the best.

Good job and nice fish Steve! Unfortunately it does get a bit crowded at the pier… on the water is not to much better…especially down there in the Trenton channel…. But it is not the o Lu spot you can catch walleyes in the river..🤓
