Went ultralight jigging in 56 degree Sturgeon Pond this evening on a cloudy, cold day with no wind. Air temp was 52 degrees. Caught and released 2 largemouth bass, 3 black crappies and 3 bluegills with a chartreuse 1/32 oz leadhead jig and 1” blue flake twister tail on 2 lb test line. The beavers 🦫 were slapping their tails on the surface of the beaver pond.

I have seen them in the wild never heard or seen the slap of their tails. You’re a fortunate man NJ and quite a fisherman as well.👍👍

Nice catching Bands. Your water is warming up much faster than ours is. Thanks for sharing.

I have been fishing that area for more than 70 years. There was a garbage dump alongside Sturgeon Pond in the olden days then a big landfill was built on the other side of the pond in the tidal wetlands. That area is polluted. I saw two fish kills there after severe winters. I also found dead painted turtles 🐢. Bowfin replaced the pickerel. After the pond gets covered with duck weed, I stop fishing there. There is no easy access to the pond and I ruined a new pair of LaCrosse neoprene chest waders last year by walking through the briars. People were killed by trains there. The only other fishing spots in that area are Spring Lake and Watson’s Creek. I stopped fishing there many years ago. The Duck Island power plant was the best fishing spot but it is now closed. The world record yellow perch was caught in Crosswicks Creek by Dr Abbot in 1865.

Yeah pollution is a big problem in a lot of places in NJ. Lived in Clarksboro for about 20 years. They tried to put a toxic qaste storage site there back in the 80s. Go over the Pitman and you had the #1 toxic site in the country. Just south of us was an open kagoon of PCBs. Took years with an arc furnace to clean that up.

Dr Abbot’s yellow perch was 18” and 4 lb 3 oz. Nobody ever caught one close to that size. 3 plus pounds is a lot smaller than 4 lbs 3 oz.
