Gaffsail,
As a freshwater guy, with only a little salt experience, I thought I'd offer something from my 2.5 years of living in Old Tampa. May be of little use to you; but had to comment since your Tampa base brought back some memories.
As I lived only a couple miles from Picnic Island Park, checked it out for surf casting. This location provides easy-access to the beach. Only had bass gear; but what the heck, I'm goin' with what I got. Waded out to my thighs and threw my 1/2 oz blue/chrome Rattle Traps. Saw a boil going on within my reach. 2-snook. We used to launch a john boat from here occasionally.
Another spot is travel west over the Gandy Bridge. A ton of access along here. Check out the bait shop on the west side of the bridge. It's a good one.
More likely useless stuff, also got a Red Fish on the Rattle Trap fishing from a dock someplace in downtown Tampa. Just a bit south of I-275. Can't recall where.
If you're a native Floridian, then I presume there is little I can add re: pond fishing. I'm a largemouth hunter and my time in Tampa/Sarasota was absolute heaven. Never had to walk more than a couple hundred yards to find alligators and bass. Flukes, Culprits, Senkos, drop-shotted RoboWorms, spinner baits and best yet anything topwater (my favorites Spro frogs, buzzer baits).
For what it's worth.
Hi Gaffsail!
I'm from Jacksonville. New member too. Can't be much help I'm sure. Fish mostly rivers and creeks. Just wanted to say welcome.

Gaffsail,
I commented once before; but here's a bit more. Here's a typical example of a Florida pond large mouth from my brief time in your state. On a black tandem buzz bait and of course, right after dark. Ya can't beat top water. I am not familiar with the Inter-coastal Waterway; but I have fished ponds. Just need to ID a good parking spot and be ready to hop a fence or two. We didn't weigh it; but I'm guessing 6+ lbs. I always recommend "scoping" runs, when you survey the area prior to wetting a line. Invaluable.
Correction...this one was not on buzzer. It was on a black Spro Poppin' frog. Previously, I had no problem getting missed strikes on this lure. This one was the first one with a mouth large enough to suck it in.
