I’m envious FY, we only had 3 days of safe ice this year in our general vicinity and certainly not enough to haul gear by snowmobile. I miss the camaraderie on the ice.

Thank you BK! It was indeed an oddball Winter everywhere...especially in the Northern latitudes! We got very lucky once February started, but for the most part it was only safe to be on foot. The last ice of our season built up enough for the heavy gear, which gave me a chance to get out and reach places I would normally have to pass on!

I was out today for my final trip of the season. The ice was cracking and groaning big time...so for me it's over for the season. It was a good year on the ice...but a very short one! We skipped all of December and January!

Another great post Yaker. I thorough enjoy reading them. Enjoy your stay down in Florida also. What part of Florida are you going to?

Thank you Gordon! I think I have a reputation for being a bit long winded sometimes, so thank you for taking time to check out the posts!

We are going to be hanging around the town of Navarre for a week or so, and then heading over to Orange Beach Alabama for about the same amount of time. I definitely will bring a surf set up...probably just one rod. Not sure if I will bring any inland lake tackle for bass, etc. I fish so much at home that I do not want to make our vacation all about fishing. My wife is very understanding, but I also know my "limits" of being too obsessed!

She is content to sit under shade awning at the beach all day long...so naturally fishing in that scenario is what I'd call a side line!

That being said, I am still on the fence about bringing a kayak with us. I know I can rent one...but then you are on somebody else's schedule. If I have my own, then I can pick and choose times to paddle.

Hey there jim42! So glad that you managed to get out and catch some smelt! The season is winding down fast now...especially with the warm temps and forecasted rain that is on the way.

The ice seems to leave various bodies of water in different ways, and although there may still be safe ice here and there it is getting to be a dangerous time of season as we go forward. So again...happy to hear that you did get out under quality conditions!
