Has anybody tried fishing for steelhead on the Alsea River or Big Elk lately? From what I've read the Alsea and Hwy 34 got hit hard from the latest storm with a lot of downed trees. I know the water conditions are not the best right now but just looking to if worth trying. I went up to Green Peter and Quartzville creek last week to try trout fishing but you needed an elevator to get down to the water. Luckily a buddy called and was heading out to his property to shoot .22's so that took the sting off of no fishing that day. Thanks for any info.

I haven't tried the Alsea this year. The Guides Forecast says that it is slow just like most of the coastal rivers. China is catching all our steelhead off the coast of Japan.

I fished the Alsea hard 2 different days last week, threw everything in my tackle box / backpack never saw a fish, never even a nibble. Fished from fish hatcher down river to state park and back. Fished with beads, different colors, bobber & no bobber same with jigs, used some plastic worms - no luck. Water was low & cold but moved a good speed. Looked at Elk Creek, did not fish, low water, slow & cold.
Go ahead and try good luck & tight lines.

Johnimac, FYI, steelhead are not native to Japan and are considered an invasive species. They are only on two islands and are not desired because they decimate the salmon and char fry.

The guy at the hatchery said that our steelhead here on the west coast travel to the coast of Japan and grow up then come back to spawn.

He might want to check with Japan about that.

Was with a group of Steelheaders this weekend. Don't know about the Alsea, but we did well on the Nestucca and Wilson.
