Looking for any help I can get on trolling for Speckle Trout. Been fishing for the last 50 years, but never tried trolling. Lots of experience on offshore fishing, bayou fishing, and Bass fishing. So trying something new, all and any help will be greatly appreciated.

How deep do you need to get to catch them? I've done a bit of trolling for kokanee. You need a downrigger to get your line down 30 or more feet for them. If you don't need to get that deep, you might look into puttting some lead line on a reel. I think you certainly want to have conventional reels, not spinning reels to deal with line twist. YouTube can be your friend for getting tips.

Hey, Skipper. Here’s a chart that may help you in establishing your depth for trolling… 🐟on

I wouldn’t think so. With the adequate line out, proper weight and speed it should work… 🐟on

Hey buddy. Trolled for trout all my fishing days. Rainbows, German browns , salmon and Kokanee. Never fished for speckled trout. Are u fishing lakes or off shore? I use mostly down riggers, sometimes will go to top water trolling when the lake has turned over and the fish can be found in the upper 10ft. I use my graph to mark the depth of the fish and set my lures using my downriggers to put my lures five feet above the depth that I’m marking the fish. That’s an important factor. If I’m marking fish at 40 ft I’ll set my lures at 35 ft. Fish always strike upward toward a bait. Also keep in mind that trolling speed is an important factor for proper lure presentation. Just my opinion. Hope it helps!

When you’re adjusting your presentation above your marked fish by 5’, are you taking blow back into account and allowing for that… 🐟on

Yes it’s a factor..always adjusting downrigger depth looking for that strike zone. I like to keep my lures about fifty feet back from the boat to help limit the amount of blow back I also use a ten pound ball on the downriggers to help to eliminate that problem on the downriggers. The five foot is my starting point

Thanks for all the replys. I'm will mostly be fishing in backbay bayous areas, in usually less that 10 feet of water. I'm also curious what kind of lures, spinner or crank baits. Don't think I'll need any downriggers, haven't seen any one else use them in this area. Thanks again for all your help, and keep a tight line.

U definitely will not need downriggers trolling in that water depth. I would try a shallow running Rapala or something similar.

No, you won’t “need” down riggers but a down rigger will give you a more precise and accurate and consistent preset depth. At any given depth. Even 10’. Just say’n…🐟on 🐟on
