What kind of fishing were these guys doing?

I was at a California lake this morning. The lake is mostly fished for trout and catfish. But the lake also has bass, carp, and some crappie. When i arrived to my usual spot there were four guys there fishing in a way i had never seen. Each one had an 8ish foot rod with no reel. In the end of the rod was maybe three of four feet of line with what looked like a stick bobber. They would cast out the short line and the rod would be placed in a holder that held the tip of the rod inside the water. Has anybody seen this technique? Ive been fishing for a long time and have never seen it once. Im too much of an introvert to walk up and ask. The holder for the rod looked like it was especially made for the rod. It wasnt an off the shelf holder that i have seen for bank fishing.

Most likely some sort of panfish. They could have been going after anything though. They were just fishing without a reel.

A jiggerpole. I have never used one but I know a couple of fishermen that do.

It's not the same equipment but it's what most of us started with - very much like a cane pole.

Used that kind of rig fishing for snook in Bradenton, fla. four feet of line and a big, noisy topwater lure. Worked it in a figure eight over and over, sometime for a half hour. When they hit, they hit HARD.

What! It didn't have a flux capacitor attached? How in the world can they catch anything without it?

Them flux capacitors do improve things. The only question when you use one is: "Jig a what?"

Sounds like tenkara. Like a fly rod and no reel right?

They use them a lot here to catch mullet in the rivers. If you fish a rod with no reel in FL from the bank you can avoid buying a fishing licence. And yes you can catch mullet on a hook without snagging them and with a 50 fish limit, and knowing how to clean them have one heck of a good fish fry for several friends. And I am very fussy about the flavor of fish I eat. Olddaw
