I see the Obalus reels advertised! I have considered trying a baitcaster rig and wonder if anyone has any experience with Obalus. I don't want to order a reel and wait months to receive it nor do I want to but junk. I realize that a $49 reel is nit going to be of the highest quality but thought it might be a good starting point.

Papa, if you want to try it, do it. From what I have read on the magnetic braking, you have to adjust it for each different weight (bait/lure) you throw. I went from bait casters to spinning reels at 16 and never looked back. First was a Zebco 33 and the problem with it was limited spool line size then. Finally "bit the bullet" and got a Mitchel reel. I just wonder if the back and forth mech is like the old Penn reel is plastic or metal. maybe some of the others here can tell us. Oh the site is having a 50% off sale on the $100 reel right now. But winter is always a "Slow Time' for fishing equipment sales. LOL

Don’t have an Obalus baitcasting reel but a few years ago picked up a Kastking for about $45. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality for such an inexpensive reel, hope you are as pleased with your new purchase.

Love my Kastking reels put them up against any high end reel. Great reel for the price. Also have several Garcia/ Mitchell spinning reels( models 308 & 300) use them regularly. Yes they don’t have all the bells and whistles as the new reels on the market but they catch fish and have never failed me for nearly 40 years.

Zebco33 is not a baitcasting reel its a spin caster there's a difference most baitcasing reels hold more line than you normally use fishingπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŽ£πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

Yes, I started on Penn reels and then went to the Zebco when I was15-16. From then on the Penn reel were left at home. Must have been 16, I made the money "Chopping Cotton" with a hoe for all of $.70 an hour. LOL

reels mitchel reels and walmart rods if they break bring it back or just buy another can't beat the price.

It's your money, and you can spend it wherever and on whatever you please, but I would advise getting an
Ambassadeur S reel to start. Pretty reasonably priced, and have been building those reels for decades. If you like baitcasting, you can always upgrade to something a little nicer later. I've found that unless you fish everyday, you can get good service without spending a fortune on baitcasters. I have a couple Ambassadeur 6500 reels I use for muskies, and a couple of Lew's Speed Spool SS 1HLA baitcasters I use for bass, and have got good service out of all of them, and they all all well below $100.

Where are they made? I couldn't find information that they were made in the United States?
