Thirty years ago I caught my first and only Sailfish. It was a blast as that fish peeled almost all of the line off that reel. Had to go after him just to get some line back on the reel. My heart was beating so fast and I was so excited seeing the fish getting closer to the boat. Hope you enjoy this video.

The speed and precision of the sailfish has captivated anglers for centuries, and as one of the world's most iconic game fish, sailfish have spawned a fishing subculture unlike any other.

‘Hooked On: Sailfish’ from Costa Sunglasses takes viewers on a journey from the Central American sailfish mecca of Guatemala to the competitive tournament arena off Florida's southeast coast.

Targeting sailfish with live bait, dead bait or fly-fishing tackle is chock full of big eats, big air and big fish.
Sailfish are an acrobatic, beautiful game fish that you can catch in a number of spots from the U.S. East Coast to the Pacific.

Costa's 'Hooked On' series explores the storied species that have captured the attention of anglers for generations. Whether renowned or ridiculed, almost every species has a loyal following tracking its every move.

Awesome video Gordon. All of the Billfish are on my bucket list. I'm jealous that you've caught a Sail. I've never caught a Billfish, but did witness an old friend catch a 90lb White Marlin. It was a fantastic experience just being there. Thanks for sharing buddy.

Pretty cool video Gordon! One of those beasts would definitely test your endurance at handling the rod and reel end of things!

Caught a small fish down in the Keys one year and a Tarpon took it. Lasted about 20 seconds then he jumped and spit the hook. Don't really target them.

I have caught all the different types of billfish, with the exception of a swordfish. Sailfish are the easiest to land because of the acrobatic show. I would guess my average fight lasted about 5-7 minutes. Never had one sound (go deep) which causes a much longer fight. My biggest fish and longest fight was on a black marlin that we all estimated to be grander. Fight lasted 2 and a half hours before I lost it. It jumped twice fairly close to the boat when we hooked it, and we never saw it again. Was an extremely tough fight and loss.

That's quit an accomplishment OBG. Seen a Blue Marlin and a Swordfish at the docks only. They fish at night with glow sticks for the Swords. Don't know how or why.

I have heard of some fights last 30 hours for a sword. Guess I will never get one at my age.

Great video Gordon. With both shoulders replaced I don't think I could deal with a monster like that. I had a hard enough time fighting Amberjacks a couple of years ago 40 miles off shore of Hilton Head. Two years ago I caught a nice 35 lb tarpon in Belize.

A guest caught a sailfish off Palm Beach from my first sportfisherman in '96 and released it boatside. Through the years I've had several break off as did a big marlin in the Dominican Republic in '98. And my step-father held two IGFA world records: Pacific sailfish on 6 lb test line and Atlantic sailfish on 4 lb test line. He also held the IGFA record for Wahoo on 20 lb test line. He caught 57 marlin during his life with the largest being a 915 lb monster he caught off Kona, Hawaii. I have the beak (pictured below) off an 882 lb, 15' 3" long Black Marlin he caught while fishing in Panama out of the famed Tropic Star Lodge. It was a lodge record, March 3, 1981.
