I’m trying to prepare for a pompano trip. I have Clousers and Shrimp but I’m wondering if a sand crab/flea imitation in a few sizes would be a good idea. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I’m no fly fisherman but they love sand fleas. Redfish and sheephead love them too. If you use them, do you plan on using sinker style fly as they are mostly bottom feeders. Then again, redfish hit top water baits too so I would imagine pompano would. Good luck and take some pictures for us.

If you find a good sand crap/flea fly please post a picture.
Thanks
When I was younger, quoting some commercial work for a local contractor to repair or replace park benches here in Mobile. What he said still sticks.....Son if you're in doubt, go the whole route. Then your #$$ is covered for sure.

I have seen Sand Crab / Sand Flea imitations by Gulp . If you look in the Gulp Saltwater Section at Big 5 Sporting Goods ..
This is what I’ve settled on. I tied this today in size #4. I’m going to tie a couple of #2 and fish them. I may try some shrimp scent gel. Hopefully my next post will fave guns and scales in it. Tight lines. AL2fly
Great looking fly! I think you will fool them for sure! Good luck!

That is the best Mole Crab Fly I have ever seen! Can you please send us the Recipe for this fly? Looks good with the clouser head for weight, etc. I can't make out what the legs and antennae are made of. I have never seen one with the hook up. and the hook down versions snag too much stuff or turn sideways on me.
I have had a lot of luck with modified bunker patterns here in NJ and in FL. It's a pretty generic profile for a lot of baitfish. I just put a dot or two on it with a permanent marker to mimic the local fare such as shad, bunker, and pilchards. I have even used blue and orange markers to make stripes and bands to imitate pinfish. The lower one is mostly synthetic with some deer hair and kind of beat up from being used. I just tied the upper one for the striper season that opens March 1st because I am running out of them. I couldn't find my hooks or synthetic deer hair, (probably left them in FL), so I tied a few with deer tail and chicken feathers on a pall point pen tube and I can change hook sizes to better match the size of the fish. They won't last as long, but should be able to catch a few fish on each before they are all torn up.
My best results overall are my shrimp patterns in almost any number of colors depending on the water color and light conditions. I don't have any left to take pictures of. I can't tie any more right now because one of the ingredients is cat whiskers for the antennae and we are fresh out of cats.
Watch the McFly Crabby Patty San Flea video on YouTube. The antennae are silicone legs for bass flys. The legs are nylon chenille burnt on the ends. I brush resin on the Mallard flank feathers and cure it with UV for the back. I’ve tied the body with Palmer, grey saddle hackle and with the shrimp brush. I’ll see what fishes better. Let me know if you make a successful change to the pattern. I have tried the shrimp patterns using the McFly Eye. The eye looks great. I don’t know if it makes a difference.
