That's wonderful to hear. Fenwick.

Can’t go wrong Kandy, they’re a bit more expensive than a budget rod but in the long run ( The Eagles) they’re well worth the slight increase in price.

That's awesome guys and I'm glad I bought my first one later last summer when I got my new Daiwa BG MQ4000D-XH. The two fit together perfectly 👍. BK I hope you give them 5 stars an a awesome review. Tell them about all us here on the stage. Hopefully they'll keep it up over the next 50 years or more 😊

I did Whitey, actually wrote them a letter and received a response.

Very cool thread in terms of BK's initial interaction with Fenwick and then all the other comments! I own several Fenwick rods as well...some that I put together and others right off the shelf. They are indeed a great blank and have served me well over the past 5 decades. Many thousands of "caught" fish would have to agree!

One of my favorite Fenwick's is resting at the bottom of Lake Superior from a "tip over" in a canoe...with a Garcia Mitchell 300 attached. Sure miss that rascal!

Glad to hear about your positive experience with the warranty BK!

Thanks yaker, I too have one of my favorite rod and reels sitting at the bottom of Raritan bay in NJ. A St. Croix Greenwater series casting rod with an old Daiwa gold reel that my grandfather had received from a buddy for his 50th wedding anniversary. The rod was replaceable but the reel was the real loss.

My brother caught a rod and reel in the Atlantic Ocean.

A positive from me on Fenwick as well. I broke a fiberglass fly rod on a king salmon about 10 years back. They replaced it with a new upgrade carbon rod, as the fiberglass was no longer made. I did not have the receipt but they exchanged it anyway. I informed them of when and where I bought it, a store long since gone. I bought it in 1973. Note: I gave my Sage to my daughter. No sense in it collecting dust. The Fenwick fits my hand better. size 8 weight.

Yeah Leo, sure can beat a custom rod properly made. Used to make them myself years ago but then got obsessed with making longbows and recurves. Here’s one I made from a Lamiglass blank in 88, still on of my favorite baitcasters for vertical jigging.

Here is a salmon snagging rod that I made in about '70. It's a 10' Lamiglass blank 1 - 3 oz. lure weight with a Garcia 6500C Ambassadeur Reel. It worked very well. I haven't used it since they closed the snagging season on Lake Mich.

Looks good. I am surprised to see such large eyes on a casting rod. I understand the need for large eyes on a spinning rod, but why are such small eyes used as the standard on bait casting rods?

Well Leo, you are certainly much more advanced than me in the rod construction, never made ornate diamond wraps. Nice work there!

A while back I posted about a disaster I encountered while fishing with my BIL in which I inadvertently broke 2 rods with a launched anchor while slamming on the brakes to avoid a deer. Broke an old Fenwick HMG and newerSt. Croix. Contacted both companies and explained it was all my fault as the anchor wasn’t properly secured. St. Croix didn’t respond but Fenwick told me to send them a picture of the break, model# and a photo of the entire rod along with the original receipt if it was still in my possession. Unbelievably, I had the receipt from 2003 in my gun cabinet
and sent it all in via email. 3 days later I received a new rod free of charge and get this, an apology that they were temporarily out of stock on that particular HMG model and instead sent me an elite upgrade. They’ve got my business for life. Their rods aren’t particularly inexpensive but are great bangs for the buck and backed by one heck of a warranty. 20 years old, broken by a bonehead move and yet still honored. I was blown away.

Back in the 70’s I had my first Fenwick, a little 2-piece ultralight, that I broke at the ferrule while yanking at a rock I’d snagged. It was my fault it broke, but Fenwick sent me a new rod,in a cool tube that I used for decades, along with instructions to TWIST the rod as I’m assembling it. I still have that rod, along with more Fenwicks that I bought over the years because of the way they took care of me.

When I built a rod for myself, I usually put spinning guides on it because then I can also use a spinning reel on the rod, and match the spine for whichever I'm going to use the rod for the most. A rod actually has two spines, one completely on the opposite side of the other. If the clinic is a side-armed caster and hook setter, I will put the spine on the side depending if he is left-handed or right-handed. Only if the clinic is an overhead caster and hook setter, will I put the spine on the top or the bottom. That is the nice part of a custom rod you can build it to the clinic's needs and wants.

Was taught by my grandfather to rub the tip ferrule on my nose before assembling 2 piece rods but that was back in the days of SS ferrules, still seems like a good idea though.
