Where does the Chehalis originate? Is it a tributary? Everything else comes down from the Cascades… 🐟on[/

The Chehalis River starts in the Willapa Hills, south of PeEll, flows East to I-5, and then back to the ocean at Gray’s Harbor in Aberdeen. When you cross the Skookumchuck at Centralia, and before the airport, you can see the Chehalis. The Chehalis is what floods I-5 when it rains. Take a look next time on your way to Merwin.
Now that you’ve shown me on the map I now exactly where it is. I just never knew that was the Chehalis. Thanks, Chief…

You are very welcome. Thanks for jogging my memories and letting me reminisce. Next time I’m out, hopefully we can meet.

As a kid growing up in Chehalis, I was told that "CHEHALIS" is Native American for "Sandy River".

Speaking of Dams on the Cowlitz, here is a little warning. Dad told me when he was fishing for Steelhead on the Cowlitz once, he had waded out to a Sand Bar once to throw into a nice hole on the other side. So he is enjoying himself casting and drifting for a hit. All of a sudden he realizes that the water level was raising quite rapidly and he just did made it back to the bank without going for a swim!

I’ve noticed that on the Lewis as well. Depth’s can change quickly. And without notice… 🐟on

Even more confusing is the regulations governing season, barbed vs unbarbed hooks, ok to use bait, etc. Fortunately, for me it’s still a great state to fish for fish that for me have always been hard to catch.

Darin,

I will take you up on that offer the next time I am headed back down there. I usually go fishing about once a month down there.

Thank you,

Jim

I’m glad I grew up in the 60’s. Minimum size for salmon with bag limit. Catch your salmon and then drop to the bottom for rockfish or cod. Basically no limits on those. Now I guess you can’t even catch rockfish. I thought I saw something about not even being about not being able to fish in water over a certain depth. I guess things were simpler then.

Last July out of Westport on a combo trip (Salmon and Bottom fish) the limit if I remember right was 7 bottom fish not including Ling Cod.

There is at least one camera on the Cowlitz that is live. Hard to tell the color, but shows the height of the water. There are actually two cameras and right now there is a boat and a fellow wading. I do not see where the location of the cameras is posted.
