Conditions on the Cowlitz are controlled a lot by the two Dams. My Brother in Law who is now gone used to have an app on his computer which told what the flow rate was over the dam.

I’ve always been amused by the fact that the Lewis River is in Cowlitz County and the Cowlitz River is in Lewis County 🤔

You can get river flow data for WA here:

https://waterdata.usgs.gov/wa/nwis/rt

Conditions also depend on where you are on the river.

With the Lewis it depends on whether you’re on the north side or south side. North side Cowlits. South side Clark… 🐟on

Right now the Lewis is flowing at 11,500 cubic feet per second at Ariel, Wa. 🐟on

I fished the lower part of the Cowlitz last Saturday the 7th. It was high and dirty then. I have no clue what it is like since then. I wish that I had a contact in the area that I could get updates from. It sucks to drive two and a half hours, launch in the dark, cross the Columbia and go up the Cowlitz to see it is high and dirty once there is enough light.

Yes. It’s also interesting that almost every major river in Washington eventually crosses I-5, with the exception of the Chehalis, and it comes all the way up to I-5 before it makes the U-turn back to the ocean 😲

Where does the Chehalis originate? Is it a tributary? Everything else comes down from the Cascades… 🐟on

The Chehalis River starts in the Willapa Hills, south of PeEll, flows East to I-5, and then back to the ocean at Gray’s Harbor in Aberdeen. When you cross the Skookumchuck at Centralia, and before the airport, you can see the Chehalis. The Chehalis is what floods I-5 when it rains. Take a look next time on your way to Merwin.

Thanks for the info! Any rivers you recommend checking out for steelhead or is it still too early?

I don’t know about the timing of the run, but I’ve seen steelhead come out of the Green River at Highway 18. Walk upstream of the bridge. We would walk out on the old bridge and see the fish in the river. The river looks really fishy in Flaming Geyser State Park, also. I would go with my dad in the winter and fish the Puyallup in McMillan, between Sumner and Orting. He always thought that we kids could make a lot of money if we took thermoses of coffee and hot chocolate to sell to fishermen with cold hands. 😊

It confuses in-staters, too! What’s really confusing is keeping straight where the Skykomish, Skokomish, Snohomish, and Swinomish Rivers are!😁 When we were kids traveling east of the mountains we would stop for snacks in George. It was fun to tell everyone that we saw George, Washington!😝😆
