After responding to another post, I got to wondering how much fish most people se aside for a meal. I pack fish in 1.5 pound bags of boneless fillets for two people. I am a heavy fish eater. My wife is a light fish eater. Given a fillet size perch or crappie I usually eat 6 fillets and my wife eats two. When traveling with my normal fishing partner, We normally target 8 fish. That allows 6 fillets each for dinner and two each for sandwiches the next day on the boat.

I am curious how much others eat (Catch and release excluded).

I bag up six Crappie filets in a zip lock with water and freeze them. They are always fried and depending on the size, I’ll eat three or four and my wife eats two. But, she always puts on a good spread of fried potatoes, a salad, and pie or cake.

Bout the only fish we eat anymore is Striper, surprise huh?
The average 20+ inch Striper yields bout 5 servings for me and Sue. (they usually weigh bout 3 1/2 to 4 pounds)
The fillet from one side is a little more than she and I will eat in one meal.
So I guess you could say we're not real big fish eaters.
We like Halibut also but Brad and I seem to have trouble catchin them.

Since my wife doesn't eat fish, I usually bag up what's left in large meal amounts. If Crappie or Blue Gill I don't filet them, bones come out easy after cooking. We do filet Perch, Walleye, and Bass, usually at the end of the season I have enough to get me through to next season. I have never had too many on my plate. BTW, we have a pretty generous limit around here, 50 Perch per person per day, I think 25 Crappie/Blue Gill, 5 Bass, and 6 Walleye. I probably have about 10-12 pounds in the freezer left now. Spring is coming.

Which vacuum sealer should I buy. They all claim to be the best. I've looked up the reviews and still can't decide what to get.
What are your thoughts.
Keep in mind that I am now on a fixed budget via Social security.

My wife & I love the perch here in Montana. I filet them and weigh out about 10 ounces per meal and then vacuum seal them for the freezer. We don't have a limit here in Western Montana so we can catch quite a few. The average size we keep is about 8 or 9 inches but they go up to about 13".

Not sure what they cost now but I’ve had this one for 10 years and it still works great. Probably 30 or 40 rolls of bags over the years. Foodsaver, game saver sport plus.

So once the fish fry of 2 Lbs is over and in the bellies one could catch more? Seems a little gray. Are fish limits there by the pound or count?

By count. I would say if you ate them then yes you can catch more as they were caught for consumption. The honor system comes into play also. We have many house boats here that people live on and many are used for camps. Each one could be checked by the DWF. Not sure if they would need a warrant though.

Seems like the legal thing to do would be to count the fish consumed on the boat as part of the daily limit.
No matter how the law reads, some people are going to find ways around it.
Unorthodox pheasant hunters in South Dakota will shoot a limit, take it home and go back to the field. I suspect there are people who fish that do the same thing.

Just checked this out. Apparently the food saver pictured is still manufactured, but currently out of stock at Walmart for $90 well within our budget.
The food saver game saver spot deluxe is also available for about the same cost.
Thanks for your input.

I have a food saver too Commander, and recommend it too. Amazon has the bags or rolls in different brand names that are cheaper in price that the food saver brand.

I prefer the rolls instead of the precut bags.

I have a "Food Saver" brand that I have used for over 15 years and it is still going strong. No idea how many rolls of bag material I have gone through, several cases for sure. I always use the rolls as they are more economical and you can cut them to whatever size you need.

Thanks we have been looking to purchase a vacuum sealer for some time now. I like the idea of weight portion bags. Will do this in the future.

Go to foodsaver.com. You’ll get a bunch of emails to delete but they always have bags and rolls on sale. Also good prices on machines.

Cookbooks say 1lb for 2 people but that never looks like enough so I buy over and sure enough, a little piece left which I freeze and eat by myself later.

I Agree. I found that a bit short. As I said in my post 1.5 for two people. If there is any leftover, cold fish is a great snack or sandwich meat. Thanks for your input.

Sound good. Unfortunately potatoes, bread and most deserts are no longer on my diet, so I eat more fish. I sometimes cheat my diet and bread my fish. When I do, I also bread mushrooms and zucchini slices along with the fish. If I am also adding onions, I make a seperate batter. Dry coating does not seem to work well for me on onions. I eat more fish for desert. I have lost 30 pounds in the last six months. It sure makes a difference getting into my boat. I have a lot more spring in my old tired legs. Those beer emojis look awful good. I cheat and drink beer with crab. I believe it is a felony, or at least a mortal sin to eat crab without beer. Have a good one.
