Looks like everyone is correct. The speckled hind, also known as the calico grouper, kitty mitchell or strawberry grouper, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a grouper from the subfamily Epinephelinae which

Better know the difference. If you keep 4 Speckled Hind thinking they are Strawberry grouper you might get a ticket.

That's a grouper..one of the best eating fish in the sea! WOW! Released it! I guess when ya don't know, you release. Man, here's what you released: Red Hind Grouper is a member of the grouper family. Grouper is a lean, moist fish with a distinctive yet mild flavor, large flakes and a firm texture. The Red Grouper has a slightly sweeter, milder flavor than the Black Grouper and is considered to be the better of the two.

Grouper is out of season here. I think it applies to all kinds of grouper, so this one is included.

And yes, it's safer to release something you don't know. Because there is an abundance of fish here. So no point in risking a fine and the license. Not like there won't be more fish caught after this one.

Just on our way back we saw a fishing boat being searched in our inlet. We've had our boat boarded and searched a few years ago. They even lifted up all cushions to make sure there isn't anything stashed away. So really not worth it keeping fish that might not be legal to keep.

It looks like a small grouper and is probably protected. If not the smaller ones are good to eat and they are fun to catch.

You might want to Google the graysby, a small south Atlantic grouper. Graysbys have 3 black spots just below their dorsal fin. The angle of your pictures is not good for seeing these spots. I've caught many graysbys in the northern Bahamas.

If you look it up should be a Ling Cod used to catch them along the California coastline all the way up to the Oregon coastline. Another species very similar to this is called Cabezon, the lingcod has white flesh, the cabezon has a blueis green flesh. both are very good eating,

Graysby Grouper has reddish spots on lighter background, like this one. Whereas the red hind has whitish spots on a red background.

Instead of telling you what it is which others will for sure. I offer this advice.
Add the app FISH RULES to your phone or tablet. FWC recommends this app also to stay up to date on rule changes, and season closings etc. App has blue background under blk fish. This will help to ID just about everything that swims near you.
Good Luck!
