Ive recently inherited gear from my Dad so I'm digging into fly fishing for the first time. I'm looking for nearby spots to fish, what time, what flys to use, really any info you have for fly fishing central California. Thank you!

Welcome to the Stage, Crusty. Have you fly fished before? If not, the first thing you have to do is to learn how to cast that fly. The presentation of the fly is one of the most important techniques of fly fishing. YouTube is your friend. Good luck!

Brand new! I've been watching lots of videos and getting my gear set up. Going to start working on my casting then looking for places to go.

It is unbelievable the amount of practice you will need in order to do it correctly. Practice perfectly, one poor cast will spook the entire pod, any additional casts will be wasting your time. They may not be gone but they will not hit your fly.

Start flyfishing with panfish. I try to start people out on bluegill in a pond or lake with lots of backcast room . Panfish are far less spooked by mistakes and many can be caught in the same spot, both surface and underwater. You learn to spot strike and set hook as well as land fish. More important, you have fun doing it.

Lessons will help you from getting into bad habits which are hard to "unlearn."
Start off on the right foot.
Remember, the line will go in the direction the rod tip was going when it stops or changes direction.
