Near Buffalo 😳, or up north? I’m in Canandaigua.
I am about 17 miles north of Buffalo, past Niagara falls. on the edge of lake Ontario.
Know the neck of your woods very well.

Well, hi neighbor! Not too many of us upstaters here (yet), so it’s nice to see someone from the area. I hope you and yours are safe from the storm.
Merry Christmas Chris,
I’m from Ohio and fished Canada for 30 years for pike and walleye.I’m in the same mindset as you and have done a lot of research and have a trip planned for Crane lake MN in the spring.I chose this mainly because we can fish the border lakes of Sandpoint and Namakan also.
We are staying at Nelson’s resort and also taking our own boat.
Have a blessed rest of the holiday season.

I have a place on LOTO and sure would like to see some northern pike in there but - nope. I've fished for northerns in:
MN- Winniebigosh, Cass Lake, Lake Vermillion, Shagawa Lake.
Big Winnie was a nice lake for northerns, walleye, and nice yellow perch. Lake can get very rough if the wind just right.
Cass Lake did not do too well.
Shagawa Lake nice walleyes and a few big northerns but nothing close to 40".
Vermillion Lake didn't catch a lot and those we did were full of parasitic eggs, even the northern which I've never seen before.
WI Cisco Chain of lakes caught a number of nice northern mixed in with some musky. We trolled in the channels going from lake to lake, and there's a nice crappie population, but you might be tired of them living in Rocky Mount.
MI(UP) - again Cisco chain of lakes. Gogebic Lake for some northern, some walleye and some perch, think you need to know the lake or talk to resort owners for good spots. Lake can get rough too. Long time ago Bond Falls Flowage - seen some yuuuuuge northerns come out of there but not sure if there are waterfront resorts on it. We use to camp on the shore.
Can't beat Canada for BIG northerns but don't blame you for wanting to stick to the US.
FYI - the fishing and outdoor shows should start showing up soon, they do up here, I'm close to Chicago. They use to have all kinds of information on places to stay and a variety of lake locations you might want to check out. I don't ever recall seeing the shows being advertised in MO
Hope this helps.
safe and sound....thanks, no pics, too busy plowing out....
thank you kwh, crane lake sounds like a good choice, i will put it on my list but please let me know how your trip goes, even if i don't make it there on this trip your feedback would be great. i believe namakan is connected to kabetogama which is another border lake that sounds nice. good luck!
Thank you. Has been a real challenge around here. Some roads and stores are still closed. But somehow the looters are finding their way around town. Amazing.
Hope you are safe and warm as well.
