I have always acted first then later realized I could have got hurt/dead. I don't know why but I think quick on my feet in emergencies. Then I think back what happened and don't remember
Other people tell me what I did how I handled things and how did I think of it. You don't think you just act.
I do. But many people freeze up when something like that happens. They want to help but are frozen with fear. Just another natural human reaction. I never fish alone either. Always have my spikes with me and wear my insulated floatation suit. Couldn't afford it until then. I feel much more comfortable knowing if I go in I won't go straight to the bottom and they will be able to retrieve my body to bury me even if I DO end up dying. I've stepped in plenty of holes on my way out to fish also. It sucks big time. Luckily I've never broke any bones from it. Good luck on your ice fishing adventures this year everyone! I hope you all have a safe season.
I wonder if the same ability to act helps in setting hooks. I can be right next to someone and I am landing fish and they are having bait stolen. Sometimes the person next to me is catching and I'm being bait robbed . Just a thought. One with surroundings. Merry Christmas

Did you get a useable understanding of Houghton lake area. Anything worth sharing if from elsewhere. Did you find a good way to find local condition?
We used to call it January thaw. There was a depth of snow on the ground.
