I am driving up Highway 5 to Portland tomorrow 12-21-22, staying at a Hostel to do some hopefully salmon fishing.
My first time there or even trying salmon fishing. Any tips on hook size, type, line, bait, hook rigging set up will help.
Yes i will pay the license fee and stamp. I am driving from Ontario, Calif for a 2 week vacay. Please help, Frank.

Most Salmon is done and it is a little early for Spring Chinook. May be some steelhead to target. I think you could call fishing guide. Jack Glass and Brandon Glass are local guides here on Sandy River. team Hookup is their guide company.
I think Jeremy said most all that can be, for a good reply. This is kinda the "lull" in our "fishing year" up here. Even a little early for good steelheading, but doable.
The suggestion to get a guide is the right move, and his recommendation is, as well. (Haven't used them personally, but have a friend who has, and have seen both father and the son on several fishing shows, and they seem to be both knowledgeable and cordial.)
Good luck on your quest, hope you have a great experience !
Try catch and release sturgeon fishing.
We've been hearing about some late-run native coho in the Clack as well as a few in the Sandy. But you better know what you're doing. Addicted Fishing just did a good video on bead fishing. Look them up. #FishFinAddicts

Coastal streams have plenty of Steelhead now, I used to fish Meldrum bar this time of year but am now in Central Oregon, I can't tell you how fishing is right now but would think it is decent. Good Luck!
We are expecting freezing rain for the next couple of days. The Nehalem, Wilson, Klaskinine, and Necanicum have steelhead now but there has been snow and ice on the coastal pass with a lot more rain predicted for the next week which will be snow on the pass. If you can get over there beads and jigs under a bobber work great for steelhead.
