Went out again today 12/14 past the gate to my “honey hole” with the boat co-owner, just the two of us. First string set by 7:50 am, last pot pulled and stacked 10:15 am with our limit of 10 each, total of 28 keepers culled down to 20 and 8 nice rock crab. Went rock and Ling cod fishing afterwards and caught a total of 7 lings, in which 2 were of legal size, and 1 nice rock fish. Back to the dock at 1:30. My co-owner wanted me to go again tomorrow, just too whipped to do 3 days in a row…………..

Are the fish bycatch or bait?

Wow, those are some of the largest crabs I have ever seen!
Keep the pictures coming, they show you’re not just lucky.
I was wondering how big your boat is and how you decide when to go out the gate? Do you check tides, wind and weather or do you just go when you have time? How rough of seas is too rough for you?
Thanks

Just another bit of info. After years of guiding for halibut, if I had only one rig to choose, it would be a bullet jig large enough to get on the bottom and control (in most cases 16 oz. but for California halibut 12 oz.), a large white or glow curly tail and a skin on 1.5wx1hx8L strip of shad tapered to a point with the hook in the wide end. The shad will flutter in the current. It can be jigged hard and fast, very slow short jigs (my favorite) or even just hung in the current when the arms get tired. I will be the first to admit that most of my experience is with Pacific Halibut, but the same rig worked (substituting the shad with bonita or mackerel strips) like a charm on California Halibut back when I delivered sail boats to Cabo,and caught my dinner on several overnight stops.

Thats interesting Bapa, we have always used either frozen or live anchovies on the drift here in SF Bay. I might have to try the mackerel strips next year when we start back up fishing for halibut. Thanks!

Jim, we go fishing after we limit on our crab sometimes. The keeper game fish (rock fish, ling cod, Cabezon) we filet and then use the carcasses as bait. Non game fish like the king or croakers (I guess you’d consider bycatch), we keep and use whole as bait. All other bait like the anchovies, squid, herring or sardines we purchase for crab bait.

Thanks Stabi, we’ve got a 1986 25’ Wellcraft with a 275HP Mercury Verado on a bracket. I check the tides and try to hit the slack or minimal variance tides. I draw the line at 3-4’ wind waves with small swells (6’ or less) with longish (over 12 second) intervals. Those conditions would be the extreme and a slow ride. I am now using this site for those predictions;

https://marine.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-122.65084&lat=37.86354#.Y5vPXy2Ia-r

It allows me to pinpoint (relatively) the area I’ll be fishing or crabbing. I’m really more of a fair weather fisherman but have seen my share of rough seas (in a 42’ sail boat and out on the party charters) and wouldn’t want to be out in my 25’ boat in some of the conditions I’ve been in on those. If I poke my nose outside the gate at the lighthouse and if it’s too nautical I’ll turn back.

Thanks Ranger, I’m about 40 minutes from the Berkeley marina where the boat is in a slip, just under 30 miles.
