Look for irregularities in the surf. They denote troughs, trenches, holes etc. Throw gulp camo sandworms (two inch variety) or sand crabs, if you can find them. I prefer the carolina rig.

I couldn't have worded that any better myself Foodfisher!

Bascially everything you need to know to get started, and nothing you don't need to complicate it!

Just a small addition: you do not need to invest in a surf rod and reel. Just a med. weight spinning rod will do. Surf perch gather just outside the first or second line of foam. Often in just a few feet of water.

A very worthy addition at that! I generally just use 9'8" Medium weight Steelhead rods, work like a charm

Surf fishing for perch..... Naaaaa! String up a 12'-15' pole with a 3-4oz weight and launch some frozen squid out there.

The siphons of "legal" pismo clams are a natural bait and they last through many bites/fish.

Let me add, fishing the negative low tides puts the clams at your feet.
