So the wife is starting to soften her stance on getting a boat. Not there yet, but getting there!
I have zero point zero experience or knowledge regarding boats that don't get underway on nuclear power and dive as soon as they can. I plan on river and delta fishing here around the Sacramento and Napa rivers for the most part, with trips to lakes like Berryessa as filler. Trolling, casting, and
soaking bait are in the cards. No bass boat, because I don't need to fight the "no gunnels" battle when taking the young grandpups out with poppop on the water. My vehicle is rated for 1750 lbs.
I am not looking for a gold plated motor, but can afford a reasonable costing vessel.
There are a lot of fishermen here, and many (most?) are old codgers like me that know sometimes comfort can come at the expense of utility.
That being said, any recommendations for or against, and why?
I really appreciate any and all help. As I used to tell my guys back when I worked "always ask the guys that know what they are doing, because they know what they are doing and have already learned from their mistakes"

Nook if you're against a bigger tow vehicle, you're limited to a pretty small boat. For example, a 16'x6'4" Tracker, side console with a 40hp Merc, package weighs 1,773 lbs dry and empty. One step up to a 16'6"x7'4" Tracker side console with a 60hp Merc, package weighs 2,533 lbs, dry and empty. Dual consoles and any similar size fiberglass boats will weigh even more. I think you should consider a more capable tow vehicle, if you want to get something roomy enough for your wife and grandkids to join you. Just my humble opinion.

yes you are humblest correct. either that or get a smaller boat and only take a total of 3 out at at a time. for a long time I had a 12' dura boat and would take 2 kids or wife and 1 hid out at a time. we had fun but of course it had its limits, so sometimes personal finances dictates what you can do, which is why I don't have a 20' here's craft and a highlander to pull it wirh

Nook,1750 lbs. is not much towing weight. Make sure you check the trailer and boat weight on your boats of preference. Hope you find one Nook!

My boat trailer weighs more than my Livingston boat and motor do.....GO FIBREGLASS and small horsepower. I've gone electric outboard, 3hp Torqeedo....and my little 4-banger Forester doesn't even know it's towing anything.

Metal boats are heavy and noisy. And I still chuckle over "fishing boats" (looking at you...."bass boat" folks)with 150hp++ (unless we're talking ocean offshore).... kinda like driving an F1 racecar to the grocery store...yeah you can, but WHY ?

To each his own, but I am out to enjoy nature while on the water and hopefully catch dinner....not trying to impress my friends or play "one-upmanship" with anybody, much less to rudely leave a huge wake to disturb others and erode the shoreline.

Just one man's opinion.

Hope you can find a sweet spot between what your vehicle is capable of towing and a boat that fulfills your needs... Good luck !

I know it's changing for sure. I will figure this is kind of utilizing the honor system. So a guy can get Direct Injection stickers to add to their old 2 cycles?

Jeremy... from the beginning of time mankind has adopted many systems, laws, and rules with the goal of shaping human behavior to meet predetermined dogma and mores. I believe you are fully aware that not a single one has succeeded. Other than stating the obvious my friend, I need your help (more data! Lol) to understand your comment.

Get a pontoon boat. The family will love it and with a good trolling motor you can fish most anywhere.

I am a muzzleloader also. Belong to Sonora Smoke Polers, maybe we have been at the same roovoos together. Shoot mostly a trade gun but also have a few 50 CVA's Mountain Rifles .

Sorry for the late reply, not ignoring the message, just lazy.
I have a GPR flinter in 50, Pedersoli Frontier flinter in 45, and a jumble of Thompsons including a Cougar and a 1 in 66 Hawkin, GPR caplock, a couple of Investarms caplocks, an old kit gun that will never see a day in a museum on display as an example of fine craftmanship, a couple of other goodies including a Pedersoli Alamo in 45. Let's see, 12 single shot pistols including a couple LePages in both cap and flint, a couple of Charles Moores in both, and of course the 2 shelves of C&B revolvers spread ot between Ruger OAs, Remmie 1858s and an 1861 colt opentop.
It's a sickness. There's something like 30-35 toys in that safe alone.
Don't do the Rondi's after catching a small mountain for grief when I showed up at one on a business trip to Mass. a bunch of years ago because my shirt and pants material had the wrong frigging thread count.
Now I just shoot, mostly paper and gongs, and the occassional berm and backstop.
I shoot with the Yolo Frontloaders outside of Woodland occasionally, but the nitpicking and political bs have worn a lot thin. I do have to say I'm still popping 3-4000 caps a year and a couple handfuls of flints get worn down to nubs. Caps are getting too hard to find for a reasonble price, so the rock locks have been seeing a lot more action lately.
But it isn't fishing with a couple of buddies. Fun but different dynamic. I can say I've cancelled a shoot or two to wet a line

Looking at all of the bp stuff kinds of sounds obsessive, but really it is just what happens over years of shooting. I don't know any fishermen with just one pole and a small tacklebox so there is that to put things in perspective.

Well, 50-60 shots is a really good day with the rifles and single shot pistols, but feeding 4 or 5 revolvers? Back up the truck to unload supplies!

So true, I have rods all over the place as well as a lot of blanks. If I think I have a special need for a particular rod that they don't make, I jut make it.

Kerry... I need a new hobby that doesn't take up to much space. How did you learn to build rods? How do you get your blanks?

We are brothers in more than fishing, I have my trade gun (love it and shoot it the most), 54 custom flinter, 3 America made CVA's in 50 , plus a few flint pistols and a few colt cap and ball . Around here not as worry about thread count or what tanning your buckskins have. Roovoos have tame down , may be its a good thing for us old timers. Anyway keep your nose to the wind and your powder dry my friend.

I know, been in it since the early 70's, between fishing stuff and BP stuff my kids have a lot of work cut out for them when I go under.

PS, don't forget hawks , knifes, possible bags, beads, etc.
