Hey buddy be safe out there. This past Monday out of Rio Vista we were dealing with 3ft swells in the main river. Ran to 3 mile island slough thinking we could find sheltered water. Nope! Tides are important but itโ€™s that HAWk, the wind that to me is the biggest factor that determines when and where I fish

Accuweather is a great site. They provide hourly wind conditions for the day

You're dead right and trust me, I am very mindful of the wind waves. I've been in rough water (28' @ 7 sec sea swell during a North Coast near-shore SAR) but the wind chop makes me crazy and wet especially in the open kayak I have now. That's why I don't venture too far into the main channels and ALWAYS have a plan B.

A few years back, I did a drift on Montezuma and on the last straightaway back to the ramp the wind and waves funneling in off of Suisun Bay were so bad that I beached my kayak and hitched my way back to my car. At the ramp, the waves were washing over (and everything off of) the dock.

Here's guy named Alan Fong he's out of the Fisherman's Warehouse store in Sac. He's pretty knowledgeable on when it comes to fishing for stripers and just about any other type of fish you'd like to catch. Here's a link to his YouTube channel Alan Fong Outdoorshttps://youtu.be/Ky7G84h-0l0 he post 2 video's a week. one's a how to video and the other one comes out on Wednesday is his fishing report. The link here's from his latest fishing report and he talks a little about striper movement and fishing for
Rio Vista stripers. And check out his older striper how to vids also. I hope this helps in answering some of your questions.

A few years back I paddled upstream from Two Rivers to the hwy 132 bridge thinking I could drift back to my campsite. Unfortunately the afternoon wind picked up blowing me back upstream and I had a VERY hard paddle back.

Ever since, I always make sure to take my drogue/sea/drift anchor (best $15 I've spent for kayaking).

It's also my #1 safety device. I have mine set up to auto-deploy (velcro tab to my PFD or belt loop) in case I end up in the water. I don't want to be drifting in the current one direction while my kayak is blowing the other.

No, did some drifting trying to fish closer to bank but all the floating debris made it tough, did better on anchor near channel with mud suckers on bottom, trying to stay outside the debris but still gotta deal with it, so much debris kinda kills the trolling guess you gotta find the open water but that's easier said then done right now, good luck to you let us know how you do
