That will ruin your whole day
Reminds me of a situation that happened when we were drilling wells in W. Texas.
At one location the limestone rock was so thick the bulldozer could not dig mud pits for our rig. So, they called in a sapper to plant dynamite in holes drilled all over the pace to be used for the mud pits.
Well, when ready, the driller took the box that created the signal to detonate the charges. I was along to carry the spool of wire.
When all was ready, he connected the box and blasted the location. Well, while we thought we were far enough away from the explosion, there were rocks bigger than a football falling all around and beyond where we were. We were like a halfback trying to catch a punt, except we were dodging these falling rocks. It seemed like an eternity! This rock shower also caved in our water tank, and the cab of our truck! Why we weren't fired, I never knew. Just Sayin...RJS
When I saw the crane tumble into the water it brought back memories of my days logging in the Black Hills. My Boss hired a new skidder operator trying to pull a load of logs off a steep slope. It was a cable unit which could pull up to 6 logs at a time. This guy was attempting to pull 3 three 40’-60’ logs up the slope, make a U-turn above the next set of logs, and come back down to grab that second set. Unfortunately, we were thinning contractors, not a clearcut operation, so there were standing trees enroute. I was yelling at him to drop the original load so he could then turn around safely, then re-grab them from below. He waved me off as he “knew better”, continued up the slope, jamming his load as he turned, and the force of the sudden stop put the machine into a partial “wheelie”, with a half twist. He panicked and released the load and the machine rolled over almost 3 times and settled in a huge cloud of dust. The roll caged saved his life and the seat belt kept him in place. We had a heckuva time winching that machine back onto its wheels, but we got ‘er done!
He was no longer the skidder operator and didn’t last the week…
