A Trap in the Pharmacy

On a holiday when we lived in the Rio Grande Valley, my family and I were back home in Gainesville, which is about 70 miles from Dallas. The Regional HQ for my company was there. I decided to drive down to Dallas, meet with the Regional Manager and make it clear that I wanted to be promoted. I would ask what more was required than just showing I would work hard and make or exceed budget.

So, I did! And I believe he was surprised that I had taken time to come in and visit with him and make sure he knew what I wanted. It wasn’t more than six months when I was promoted to become responsible for the Houston Medical Center, V.A. Hospital, and John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

I did not expect such a much larger job. This in total is probably larger than any other single medical center in the U.S. In my next meeting with the Regional Manager, I asked just what I do with such a large package. He said, “Just see what is behind all the doors!” The salesman I was relieving took me around and introduced me to many of the ‘movers and shakers’ there. I believe he already knew I knew how to sell products.

Each separate hospital had a huge pharmacy and a formulary to keep down any duplication of items used there. Several of the largest hospitals I called upon their chief pharmacist every week. This is where I vicariously learned about one of the chief pharmacist’s secretary.

She was the person who gave me any written orders for our products, so I could not avoid meeting with her regularly. I don’t remember exactly how I learned she was particularly fond of getting well acquainted to new young pharmaceutical salesmen. After a fashion, she tried to make it clear that ‘sleeping with her could get you more business!’ Having been tipped off as to her proclivities, I made it a practice to get in and get out as quickly as possible and make sure it was strictly business.

Regardless of how any male feels about such a female, I could think of about 20 possible outcomes, and all of them bad! In the first place, if her reputation was in fact true, it would also have you linked to that rumor quickly, which was the last thing I wanted. I was there for business, not fooling around with her.

Besides all the people I met in a quick exploration of all the departments, schools, and hospitals, I think the very best thing my former salesman gave me was helping me get a Doctors'
parking permit for my car! Just Sayin…RJS

I had forgotten the term but 'Cougar' was what I believe describes the pharmacy secretary. I felt it wise to steer clear of her! Just Sayin...RJS
