On November 10, 1775, the Continental Marines were established by the Second Continental Congress, which called for “two battalions of Marines be raised “ for service as landing forces. The Marines were abolished after the American Revolution and following the Treaty of Paris in April 1783.
On July 11, 1798, Congress ordered the creation of the Marine Corps for service under the secretary of the Navy.
In 1921 the Commandant, MG John A. Lejeune issued the order, that the Marine Corps first formally commemorate its birthday on November 10th.

My Dad and his brothers were all Marines. Viet Nam was still goin strong when I joined the service in '71 and I didn't want to VOLUNTEER to go over there which is what would have happened had I joined the Marines at that time.
My Dad died when I was 11 so I talked to his younger brother, my Uncle, and explained what my thoughts were and he agreed so I joined the Air Force and was fortunate enough not to be sent over there during my 4 years I was in. Some that I served with were, but not me. The war was over shortly before I got out in '75.
Happy Birthday Marines, Semper Fi.
