Yesterday my buddy and I went out to Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay and we saw these guys on the fishing pier standing on ladders and upside down 5 gal. buckets casting beads and hook out. Never seen this before. Turns out at this time of year the salmon come in and these guys stand on the ladder in order to see the salmon. They try to get the beads/hook near there mouth and hopefully the beads will run across the lip and snag them in the mouth. If they are snagged in the mouth you can keep them. Snag 'em anywhere else and you gotta through 'em back.
Anyone out there fish this way? Would like to hear your story.

Ive heard of standing on ladders to allow casting out to where the fish are beyond just standing on shore or in shallow water.

I think those guys were pulling your leg a little bit, "Snagging them by the lips" LOL Nahhhh. I'm not biting on that one.

Good pun, BlackDog!! I thought exactly the same way, so when I got home I Googled it....

Flossing for salmon is a technique used to catch fish, such as sockeye salmon, that are no longer eating. Instead of targeting fish with bait or flies, flossing is a technique where the angler uses weights and a long leader to thread the hook into the fish's mouth.

Wow! Since I have never fished for Salmon I'll plead my inexperience here. However, that is fascinating to know and i would love to try that some time.

This is exactly why I love the stage! You can learn something new all the time.

Thanks BF.

Hang around and let's see who else hits on this one.
Good Stuff, Nice link.

I have heard of flossing when fishing for salmon in freshwater when they are not feeding but striking at things that get in their way. usually peg a bead about 1" or so above the hook. I thought they just grabbed at the bead and spit it out but in doing that the hook following the bead by a little in effect allowed the line to run through their teeth and hook them. that all might not be exactly what happens all I know it is pretty effective. and I know there is a disagreement among anglers if it is really "ethical" fishing technique just a form of snagging. I am surprised it is used in salt water where the salmon are still feeding and drug in front or across the fish by sight. at least when used in rivers it is usually floated down the river beneath a float and the fish still has to grab it

Flossing for sockeye is the norm in freshwater Alaska rivers.

As Halibut46 stated, it is the main method of harvesting sockeye with rod and reel in the Kenai and Russian River in Alaska. It has been going on for so long, that many Alaskans believe sockeye can only be caught snagging. "Wrong".
That being said, it is a very excepted in Alaska. The fishing laws are written to accommodate that form of fishing and wardens are around to make sure people fish/harvest within those laws. It is also legal to just plain snag salmon in some bodies of water at certain times in Alaska. Snagging in Seward and Valdez is such a party atmosphere that even the bears come in to get their fair share. Like the rest of the work, salmon are so thick it looks like you can walk across them "until they are not"

Those fish don’t bite is a foolish statement. If not pressured by flossers they are certainly willing to bite. Well cured salmon eggs, tuna balls, and sand shrimp are the best baits. Spoons, spinners, and plugs work also.

I was there 3 weeks ago and saw Two salmon caught within 5 minutes of each other.
I had never seen this technique before but it obviously works.

What were the upside-down 5-gallon buckets for?

Some people up here(including myself) have, or do, floss for salmon. Except a lot of the time we can't see them. You just have to have the "feel" for it. If it's not hooked around the mouth area, it has to go back.

The ones that didn't bring ladders used upside down buckets to stand on to see the fish. Most
used 2 or 3 stacked buckets for more elevation. Really have to have good balance.
