Some quality tools never let you down. I had a Mitchell 300 years ago, dont know where that went, someone is probably using it.
I still have 3 one unused in the box all have extra spools don't take them out fishing much anymore. They were the reel in their days though work horses but heavy๐ฃ๐๐
I have 3 pre-Garcia(French made) Mitchell reels. After going through some very expensive Asian junk, I went back to the old reliable 300 series. They are cast iron!
I still have a few Mitchell reels, dependable and reliable. They donโt make them like that anymore.

The drag on my very old Mitchell #300 seized up, but I managed to fix it by using my favorite tool and oil. Now it works like new again. Lol ๐
What did you use the hammer for, besides beating the crap out it? Thatโll show it?๐ณ

I have 3 from the early '60s, still using 2 but the third one needs some minor repairs. They might be a little noisy and a bit old fashioned but I don't think you can "hurt" them. I've put a lot of fish in the freezer with them.
Things older than me and then some hope last as long or longer ๐
The pre-Garcia reels are cast iron. I went out on ebay and found three over time...from ultralight to heavy for trolling and surf casting. One came in the original box with the manual!.
They are easy to care for (compared to the overpriced monoframe crap they sell these days). Take it apart at seasons end, clean it, use lightweight lube on The gears, oil the bail, and it's ready for next season.
Fish don't have ears....๐
Something is not right...all my Mitchell's have a small lever on the side. One way it free spools, the other it only rotates one way...hmmm๐ค

If your referring to what I said I stand corrected its been so long since I used them what I remember now is you can't change from left to righthand reeling sorry my bad and the 300 only comes in one size the 300 the reels made today are far superior otherwise they would still be making the old models technically they've advanced

Precision percussive maintenance, aka, PPM
I've used a lot of modern reels...Shimano, Abu, etc. They just don't hold up. My buddy had a $60 Shimano break off the stem while fighting a 10 lb catfish.
I have had reels lock up while fighting reds in Florida. And, my brother, who live in Naples and is notoriously poor at doing reel maintenance, usually brings me a box of em to straighten out when I visit from Virginia. Be kind of laughed when I sent pictures of the Mitchell's...first spinning reels we ever got from my dad. 304 I think.
I still have some high end modern reels, I just use them for specific species.
