So after 2 months of back yard practice casting with my first baitcasting set up I went for it today. Landed 12 bass, no hogs but was plenty of fun. Only about a half dozen nasty backlashes. First time fishing with jigs as well. Fun day all in all.
Great onward and upward.
Mind over matter.
Ya get where you don't mind and it won't matter.
Practice is best with a fish on the other end.
You have some beautiful water to fish in that part of the country. Well done, sir.
Congratulations. In a other couple months of using your baitcaster you'll have many backlash free trips. One day you'll draw back for a cast & the lure catches on an overhead limb or whatever & you'll wind up with the bird nest nightmare's are made of. Done it a couple times. Bet every baitcasting fisherman has done it. Welcome to the club. Wouldn't take for my baitcasters.
Now you have it in your blood. I had several backlashes especially in the wind Thursday. Finally quit due to the wind. Nothing feels like success as a perfect cast. The backlashes are just to remind repeat your good cast. What did you do to make those cast perfect. Then repeat add catching a fish with what feels like more control of the catch. Enjoy young man.
A good friend of mine is a pro & one of his sponsors is Diawa. He brought me a reel he wanted me to try. It was a computer chip infested electronic wonder reel. It was spooled with 30# power pro. I could not get that reel to backlash. Throw a lure & take your thumb off the spool, let it hit water. Throw into the wind. Back off the setting so when you hit the thumb bar the lure dropped immediately to the ground. Didn't matter, it wouldn't backlash. I gave the reel back & told him it just wasn't a fun reel. A backlash is part of using a fine baitcaster. My opinion.
