Colorado fishermen cited for poaching 460 pounds of salmon in Northern Michigan
By John Tunison

MANISTEE COUNTY, MI -- State conservation officers cited a group of Colorado fishermen for illegally taking more than 460 pounds of salmon in Northern Michigan, then donated the fish to local families.

State Department of Natural Resources conservation officers were on Manistee River fish patrol near the Tippy Dam when an angler notified them about a group downriver that was “using illegal methods and equipment” to take fish.

The officers then approached the fishermen and found they did not have valid fishing licenses, were using illegal tackle and had 17 salmon taken by illegal methods.

Once discovered, the fishermen admitted to taking other fish. Officers found 40-50 more salmon at their vehicles. Some of the fish had already been filleted.

DNR staff said the amount of illegally taken fish weighed 463 pounds.

“It’s a shame that this group invested so much time and money to travel all the way to Michigan only to illegally take these salmon, a valuable, public natural resource,” DNR Sgt. Grant Emery said in a written statement.“We are grateful for the angler who approached Killingbeck and MacNeill, which allowed them to recover the fish with enough time to safely donate to local families in need.”

Had the Colorado group been properly licensed and used legal gear, they could have taken 30 fish legally.

Like plumbob said GREED..

I’m not sure greed covers this, I mean I make it a personal rule to not disagree with plumbob, but does greed even explain that level of disregard for the law, and all the other things they clearly didn’t care about? I can’t imagine the level of hubris it would take to travel that far, blatantly fish out in the open using illegal tackle and equipment without obtaining licenses and ignore limits and all they did?

I worked with a guy in California back in the seventies that got caught with eight deer in his truck. I never heard what all they did to him, but I’m sure they took his truck, his gun, his license, and a chunk of his freedom by the time they were done with him.

stuco...... EIGHT deer, wow, that guy is really something. If there's a Poacher's Hall of Fame, he should be in it. Definitely a candidate for G.O.A.T. sleazy, greedy a$§ poacher. But we had a deer poaching competitor who was pretty bad in Meriden CT. around the same timeframe. There was a sort of zoo in a park there, had some clipped peacocks and White tail deer in a fenced in enclosure. Some clown "harvested" two deer and left a third bleeding out. Bow "hunter" : The kids really liked that wildlife display, but of course, that didn't bother the miscreant, whose only concern was to get some free meat, I guess. Unfortunately, never apprehended. Dirt bag !

Wow nutz4fish, your scumbag may actually take the cake over mine! Hard to believe, but then I find a lot of what cheaters and thieves come up with hard to believe. I’m glad I was taught to be honest and act with integrity. I’d have a really hard time sleeping or living with myself if I did stuff like that.

This guy I worked with was just kind of crazy. I think he ate venison every day, he would show up to work in clothes he had made, or made out of buckskin. I really don’t think he thought killing that many deer was wrong, it was just stocking up for winter in his twisted mind. Doesn’t make it okay, but he just didn’t get it.

Morons. My brother came down to southwestern Colorado to go on a fishing/camping trip. He didn’t want to buy a fishing license and insisted I buy a two pole stamp and he could fish off that. I said I don’t think that’s quite legal. I finally talked him into buying a fishing license. It’s not worth The cost of getting cart.
