Can anyone explain why there is white mucous on my leader when I catch catfish? How do they get it so far up the leader? Purpose?

Can’t answer for sure but they roll around when your bring it in I think it comes off then. Now I’ll say something that you may think is crazy. If we get finned by the catfish we rub that slime in the finned finger. A lot of times it won’t get sore and if it does it won’t be near as sore. This came from my grandfather (my Fathers Dad ) My father swore by it. A whole nother story 🇺🇸🐠on

Pine-Sol will do it too, even from the sting from the hard heads. I carry a small bottle of it in my tackle bag.

Didn't know that, learn something new on here all the time. The slime off a hard-head does work but I like the pine-sol idea better

That slime is the fishes protection against infectious bacteria. When you get spiked the bacteria can be left in the puncture wound, which can lead to infection and pain. So basically the slime is protecting you from infection too.

Makes sense to me, I know it works.
My bil ended up in the ER from a hardhead stab in his knee, it swelled really bad

Now that is interesting. Just a matter of time before I get finned again. I've seen it ruin the day for more than one person.

That is the protective slime that all fish have, it's a bit more pronounced on the catfish it will accumulate on the line as the fish rolls

A hard-head catfish; look just like the cats caught in fresh water. But, they are nasty from to tailbone to the gills. If they sting you, you could be sick for as long as six weeks. They have ruined many vacations. I got stung once on the finger and my arm caught on fire in a few minutes. I was a member of the Gulf Shores Fishing Forum and I asked them, what I could do about it, and they said to put Pine-Sol on it ASAP. I did and it felt pretty good in a few hours. Now I carry a squirt bottle of it in my tackle bag. If I get stung, I give it a squirt and keep right on fishing. I also use it if I get hooked and when I wash my hands before lunch.

There is always slime on my line whenever I catch a catfish. If I lose a fish and there is slime on my line, I know that I lost a catfish.
