The one on top i see on rods on the bigger boats going out to the canyons for tuna and other bigger fish…i dont think ive ever seen the low profile ones. They must be more for freshwater.

D the main difference I see is line capacity n more drag. I have one round reel on a catfish rod n it actually cast very well. When I striper fish with my sil n his dad I had a 7' freshwater rod with a low profile reel spooled with 12 lb floor. Had no break offs. The rest of the guys was running 30lb braid on spinning. My spinning rod had 15lb. I tend to go as lite as I can. I'm weird that why. 😕 🤣

try keeping yours thumb lightly on the spool in the beginning when you cast.
Strat short casts, and then move up to long casts

That was another problem
I was push down to hard
I reset the brake
Tighter
It helped a lot
No birds nest this morning
Light pressure
Then just b4 hit water full thumb action

If you are practicing Catch and Release, the worst thing you can do is play a fish until they give up. Most will not recuperate. That's why responsible organizations like MLF require a quick catch, weigh and release. Read up on Lactic acids built up in tired out fish.

Will do
I was always wondering why these guys I watch on Utube reel in so fast
Then get there fish show and in water
Maybe a minute at most

Hey Delta, I don't know anything about Okuma reels. Like one person said, "read the destructions". I said "destructions" on purpose, because that what happens a lot of times. Before braid lines, I went to bait casters because of the line twisting with mono. When my wife and I were really heavy into fishing, we landed up using and buying a bunch of Shimano Curado reels. I could "set" them so both of us could cast well with them.

When we fished, we had setups for topwater, spinner baits, crankbaits, T rigs etc. all ready to go on deck. No messing around with changing lures etc. If your reel is set right, all you have to do is stop it when it hits the water.

Now that we have braid, I enjoy my spinning reels a lot more, especially for light lures like for crappie and bluegill for the kids too.

Also, when you start working with your reel, use at least a half ounce or more lead weight tied on to make sure the line is pulled off the reel.

👍🏼 I thought about a little extra weight
Just till I get better at this
Hopefully in a few weeks
Practice every day b4 I have to go back to work
Can’t stay on disability forever
But can make best of it while I’m off

Loosen or tighten brake to your liking. You’ll find the setting that suits you and your reel/lure. Good luck.

Thank you
The tighter brake seemed to help today

DC ... You be it is . It took me forever to feather properly and use a bit more pressure before a heavy bait touches down. But, even a dope like me figures it out . Absolutely HATE birdsnests, I wanna fish, not pick away at those £>{#"'n things.

I think I will be an expert at nest removal before I know it 😂
And as sinker said get a line pick
So off to the bait shop I go today

That would make sense Griz as i see the round , big baitcasters on boats going out to deep water for big fish.

And im weird the opposite way…i put on slightly heavier line than the reel calls for….just in case…

And besides….there aint no Great Whites in a lake.😎😎

K.......those big offshore reels are drop down reels, you can't cast those suckers, or maybe I should say, "I can't cast those monsters"

Interesting. I wonder how keeping them in a live well effects them. Any info on that? Learn something every day. Seriously want to know

Lots of studies on that subject for the sake of me getting in an argument on the stage Google the question. YouTube also has plenty of videos on the subject Good Luck 🎣😎👍

Same boat. Bought an Abu Garcia to learn. Found out it was almost impossible to clear a nest with braid. Ended up with mono. Lost a lot of capacity so I'm down around 75-100 yards now. Practiced many days until my arms said enough. Stood on the dock at Suisun launch flinging 4 inch swim baits with the hook buried in the body so I didn't snag on all the junk when I had to fight the inevitable nest.
Still get them occasionally, but have almost stripped the reel on my casts lately. Even played around trying to hit junk 100 feet away in the middle of the channel with, to me, amazing success.
Now all I have to do is find a place to fish with it!
Honestly though, I am still a spinning reel kind of dude. Been using them for as long as I've been chasing trout, and that is a long time

Don’t whip ur rod tip at mid point off cast it will cause the spool to spin faster than ur plug is traveling bird nest most every time
