The Okuma rod I recommend is a 2pc, 8’6” Celilo paired with a size 25 reel and you’re in business. The rod will cast light lures a long way.
They have shorter models available as well for about $40

Thank you OJ......good info.

Thank you Fishyaker......I totally get it!

You are very welcome! Lot's of great comments from others for you to ponder as well.

Early this past Spring I was organizing some tackle in my garage and stumbled upon an old 6' long Eagle Claw back packing rod (4 piece) that I bought for an extended hiking trip into Glacier National Park about 20 years ago. After brushing off the "dust", I thought..."gee, this rod deserves a reel"! I purchased a tiny little Pflueger President model for it and ended up using it for yellow perch fishing this season. It was a great rig and was low cost as well. The only drawback to me was that it does not have the old fashioned "anti reverse" switch on it. I use that feature a ton on all my spinning reels, so that has been a slight adjustment for me but it is no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I noticed several others suggesting that particular reel....and I would concur with them on it being a nice unit.

As most of you know there's nothing like ultralight fishing. The fight is amplified and the bend in your pole gets your adrenaline pumping. To make a long story short I have 2 of them. One is a KastKing 100 and the other is a Bass Pro Shop Dough bait combo. Anyway I want to seriously upgrade. I don't want to have to take out a mortgage for it but I want a nice setup. Either individual rod & reel or as a combo. Thank you in advance for your responses.

I can agree with you Bruce. You should check out the Reel Test and Bass n' Bonsai on You Tube both are only about the testing of reels and rods for ultralight fishing very informative as they have checked just about everything on the market. I'm sure your going to like these sites Good Luck and Tight Lines πŸŽ£πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

I find the St Croix ultra-lite combo to be a great choice for panfish. It will give you the fight you are looking for and toughness to land a largemouth if it decides to take your offering. In my book, you get what you pay for, and St. Croix combos will do the job. I have 6 St Croix rods that preform as good as the day I purchased them.

Since you wouldn't tell me what type your looking for, here's my 2 Β’. You can't do a lot better than a St. Croix rod and they make very nice rods all the way from their Triumph line (made in Mexico but still very good quality). Go to their website and order one, you won't beat the price and you can browse and pick the one you want. I own a Triumph I use for larger trout, had it for over 20 years, as good as the day I bought it. I also own an Avid that I bought for my wife some years back, she doesn't use it, it's now one of my favorites. I also own several different Trout Series. I think you might find those very interesting. They go for right around 125 dollars, but they are super nice. As far as a reel goes I hear nice things about the Pfleuger Present. I won't say yay or nay, I've never used or owned one, I'm a Shimano guy but I will say the Shimano NASCI is a mighty nice little reel for right around 100 bucks.

Now if you're looking for a conventional (casting) setup, in ultra lite, get out your wallet if you want a decent setup. They're out there, but they're expensive. For my bank account anyway.
I have a Shimano SLX DC mounted on a 6' 4'' Major Craft UL I bought a couple years ago from Amazon. That thing will throw a 1/8 oz Kastmaster about a half a mile with the right line on there.

They may not make it any longer, Amazon doesn't carry it. Have to do you home work, that's how I found mine. The six dc and that rod were almost 600 dollars. Worth it? It's a joy to fish with, I've never had a backlash. Nothing bad to say about it and hey you only live once, right? You tell me.

I'm not familiar with either of the setups you mentioned. Are you looking for spinning or conventional? I own both. You can buy a decent spinning rig for a reasonable price. Conventional not so much. Probably gonna hafta buy Japanese, they're heavy into that "finesse" fishing.

Howdy Spirit! My wife's is a fifty yo 5',4 piece eagle claw matching 308 mitchell. Mine is fifty yo 6', 4piece Ted Williams with matching reel. Good to hear from you.

Interesting πŸ€” my Presidents have the ability to flip the switch in order to back reel which I use when I get a fish bigger than anticipated on that setup. It comes in handy for bass and pike. My Pflueger Trion models do not have that feature. Mine are fairly new, but may be older models which must be different than yours fy?

I fought a fish for 55 minutes with my $9.95 Shimano R2000 and 2 lb test line. Caught 20 lbers with my $19.95 Mitchell Avocet and 4 lb test line. Cheap reels are great.

I have several ultra light rigs. Recently I built a 6’ rod on a CRB blank. It works great with a Shimano Sahara 500 reel and 3 lb test line.

I have and use both the pflueger president pressp20x (2 of them) & the diawa regal lt rglt1000d (3 of them).

If I were to choose 1 over the other it would be the diawa 1000. It's smoother, casts longer casts and has a better/stronger drag.

As others have stated St Croix are excellent rods. Myself I look at what a specific st croix rod is setup up (blank,eyes,reelseats/etc) and then compare what others are offering. This ul rod is actually setup with excellent hardware for the $$$.

I use braided line on all my ul setups and quality eyes make a huge difference when casting 1/64th oz jigs when fishing for crappie.

OJ...just noticed your comment and after checking my reel...it is actually a Trion model...which at a glance looks just like the style of the President models. I do have several larger President models on other rods, and they do have the anti reverse switch. I am fine with this Trion nevertheless, and it has been performing admirably for me thus far! I think it was $29 from our local Dunhams Sporting Goods store as bought last Spring. It was a great fit for the little Eagle Claw pack rod, which I believe also set me back around $30 bucks when I bought it many years ago.
