A modest goal of mine is to catch a smallmouth bass of any size - it doesn’t matter - in Mississippi. My wife and I will spend a few days in the next few weeks camping at J. P. Coleman State Park on Pickwick Lake to pursue that goal. I would appreciate specific suggestions and/or advice that might help. I have extensive experience catching largemouth and spotted bass on tackle from ultralight spinning gear to fly rods. I do not use baitcasting gear. I will be bank fishing only. Thanks in advance!

I have caught smallmouths right at the entrance to JP Coleman boat launch area….as you leave the the launch area, the rip tap rocks are good and then the rock walls to the left as you leave the area…water is deep there and sometimes holds fish….good luck.
Thanks! I’ll try it there.
Jack,
I can't help much on the lower end of Pickwick as far as where, but I can tell you I have been catching smallies on brown and green bucktail jigs with green pumpkin trailers with the tips died orange... This is nighttime pattern, and I haven't done much before dark... Don't know if it will help, but there it is! Good luck and have fun!

Success! We got to J. P. Coleman State Park Campground late on Thursday afternoon and set up the camper. Straight to the water I went and, on my second cast, I caught a nice smallmouth on an underspin jig. In three days of fishing, off and on, I didn't catch another one! I did catch a couple of largemouths and a sauger, which was a first for me. But my goal was to catch a smallmouth bass in Mississippi and I did it!
