Australian living in Texas - I wasn’t a -huge- fisherman in Australia but it’s definitely something I’ve been hankering to get back into but haven’t attempted fishing in Texas yet.

Australia was so rich in fishing with native species, great variety of freshwater and saltwater estuaries and dams.

Is anyone familiar with fishing in Texas? Does anyone have any tips or tricks? Anything that’s absolutely essential to get started? (Aside from a fishing rod)

Geez, I flew into Austin earlier this summer and all I saw were ponds and slow flowing rivers everywhere. I bet you could land bass all day in just about any body of water there using soft plastics. Remember to use big hooks for bass because they have giant mouths.

My fav setup for landing bass from a lake or pond is a senko worm on an EWG worm hook (no added weight). Cast it out and let it sink. Don’t reel it in right away, just let it sink because they’re designed to wiggle as they sink. After it hits the bottom, wait a few seconds, flick it toward you a few inches, reel in the slack, let it sink. Repeat.

Have stated this before, but will repeat for newbies; one of the
best resources for information on where to fish and available species is your state's Fish and Game Dept., or in your case, the
Texas Parks and Wildlife ! You can find all your fishing regulations, licenses, fishing reports, fish species for specific lakes/rivers, maps with distance and estimated driving times given, etc. ! Not sure if you're aware, but many lakes and rivers in your area have 'gators, so you may want to check into that info also when looking for places to fish ! Also, you can fish for free (no license required) in any Texas State Park, provided the lake or pond is entirely within park boundaries; just pay park entry fee and you're good to go ! There are roughly a dozen state parks within about a half hour's drive of the Forth Worth area alone ! Good luck with your
search and your fishing !

One of the best lakes to fish in Texas is Lake Fork near you. The bass there are usually huge ! use topwater lures and creature baits and plastics.

Lake Ray Roberts, north of Denton is an awesome bass (and crappie) lake. Lake Texoma, bass, crappie, cats, and HUGE strippers.

Dang ! Another fella who likes his 'strippers' fat and sassy ! Sorry, buddy, but most of us here prefer 'em light, lithe and lovely ! And don't forget; the bigger the bait
($5s/$10s, etc.) the better the catch !
