Hi guys and gals. Just soliciting some ideas here. My teen son came storming back into the house after fishing a nearby lake (actually more like a 20 acre pond) visibly upset because he accidentally knocked his favorite combo out of the jon boat and into the water. He said he spent the next hour jigging for it to no avail. So...what kind of Safety measures should he take going forward to prevent this from reoccurring?
1) Rod buoys (styrofoam) from BPS - bought some a while back but for some reason he doesn't want to use them. Maybe now he will!
2) Rod leash or lanyard you attach to your wrist or the gunwale. Is there such a thing? A couple downsides I see with this is if you switch hands or switch rods alot, it could really be a nuisance.
3) ?
4) ?
5) ?

Thanks in advance!

I am surprised no one has come up with a device like the pfd that inflates when it hits the water.

Maybe they have and I am unaware.

Was bass fishing with a guy a month ago and he got so upset about a very very large smallie coming unhooked at the boat that he threw down his rod - it bounced once and was gone! Loomis rods don’t float either! I won’t fish with him again after the Tirade he threw after that. It was his own fault. Hate to confess but I was not sorry that we couldn’t snag it after trying for two hours.

Those devices along with the cartridge would seem kinda heavy but I could see maybe downsizing it and using an airsoft cartridge. Good idea EO! Wonder if there is such a thing but I would guess it would be kinda pricey.

Dew diligence be more careful lesson learned, won’t happen again. Part of growing up. Keep going back and trying for it. Had a friend who lost one and the next time one he got it.

How deep is the pond DC? A mask and flippers come to mind. I've never seen anything besides the rod buoys, and lanyards. Those are what the Yak guys use, if they need to.

Fred - I'd say about 10-15 ft. He's going back out tomorrow to try again.

SV - Yes! Lesson learned, albeit an expensive one! He's going back out tomorrow with a makeshift hand gaff.

Free diving to 15 feet is pretty easy. Find a teenager who wants to make a few bucks.

Fred unfortunately it's an HOA pond and swimming's verboten. My son was really tempted though!

Don't happen enough to worry about. Now he knows. Wonder what kayakers do. Plum might tell us.

Aside from a nighttime S.E.A.L. mission, tie up a half dozen big treble hooks and try to snag it.

The only problem with a small pfd would be keeping it dry while fishing so it doesn’t accidentally inflate - like in the rain. (Myrna’s idea) 👍 Also may create a balance problem…..
