Alaska Fishing

Greetings! I've fly fished the Situk River out of Yakutat, Alaska several times over the past nearly 30 years. The Situk hasn't changed much but the fishing has. It is far more crowded on the banks than when I first threw flies at Coho in August 1994. I still enjoy going there and still manage to hook fish, but I am timing my trips so as to avoid the crowds as much as possible yet be there earlier or later in the runs of the particular salmon species. I intend to fish in late July or early August next year to catch the later sockeye runs and the earlier running coho.
Please let me know if you have suggestions to better my timing.

Go with the tides! The larger swing tides bring in the salmon.

Personally I’m just jealous or is that envious. I have fished for Salmon and Halibut, in Alaska, it is crazy fun.

Greetings! I've fly fished the Situk River out of ... (show quote)

Hi McCarty- I have not fished the Situk. Two years ago my sons and I fished the Tsui, which is only a couple miles north of the Situk. We went out of Yakutat to a lodge on the river and had a wonderful time. It was the last week in August and the River was full of Silvers. Great fly fishing! Unfortunately, there are two lodges and a lot of fly ins, so the short river was crowded as well. This Lodge stays open from mid Aug. to the 1st week in Oct. The peak is the last week in Aug. through the 1st or second week in Sept... If you want the best fishing I don't think there is a way around a lot of fishermen. Lots of bears and the scenery was spectacular! I understand that the Situk has a good run of Steelhead a little later in the season. You might want to give that a try. I'll try to post some picture later. Tight Lines!

Much obliged to all. While I consider the tides when I'm on site, I will be more considerate when scheduling the days of my visit. Thanks.
