Hello fellow anglers, I am planning a road trip to Portland Christmas vacation and would like some pointers as to the fishing availability. I have never salmon or steelhead fished, only dreamed of it. Online the fishing license is expensive and do plan on buying one. recommendations on poles, reels. line, hooks and bait? Also what rivers or lakes are accessible? Solid advice is welcomed. Pictured is called Lightening trout caught at Prado Regional Park, Calif close to home.

Beautiful fish. Is that a Rainbow Golden hybrid? How big do they get?

They started out in WV I believe. WV Mike catches them pretty regularly. CA DFW plants them in a few lakes. McClain gets quite a few. Not sure if they can reproduce or not.

Great question. I live SW of the city and as a East Coast transplant find it difficult to find good fishing. I joined Fishing Stage to get some help for myself and my son as well. Anyone able to share some secrets 😃

The salmon fishing is not happening up here around Christmas. Steelhead can be.

At bit late for the fall Salmon run. A bit early for the steelhead. But you will find some at the coast in december.

Like others have said, Christmas time is kinda "in-between seasons", sorry. I would suggest you follow the advice of "head to the coast", possibly even hire a guide for the best shot.
Good luck !

PS..... I can say for ALL folks who buy licenses to fish Oregon, we feel your pain $$-wise. I'm a resident and by the time I got "angler license", salmon/steelhead license, two-rod endorsement, Columbia Watershed endorsement, shellfish license and my local Jackson County Park yearly permit, well over $150 !
My sympathies are with the non-resident fisherfolk, but I must say that with only a few exceptions, the state does a pretty decent job with stocking, ramps, access, etc., so we bite the bullet and pay whatever is required..... it's what any type of addict does to get their "fix" !

Washington has a good program to encourage visitors to fish with short term licenses, but Oregon has noyhing like that.

Brittish Columbia offers a great deal on non resident one day license. About six dollars U.S. per day with a added salmon conservation stamp for about the same. The stamp is good for a year. There is decent blackmouth fishing in the winter as well as some reasonable guides around Sooke.
