Never really fished from boat.. always bank fishing from stock pond... Recently retired and the wife and I want to learn to catch fish. Have a 2 man Bass Tender 11ft boat with 25hp Yamaha... Not going to take on the open sea ,but perfect for even semi rough water on windy days... Looking for any pointers or advice on first timers ( type of tackle, technique or retrieval) Really any advice in general.. No matter how big or small we are catch and release.. thanks for responding

Stop in any tackle store and ask around. They will not only provide you with the "how to" but also sell you what you need to begin your endeavor with fish. Worms are always good whether real or plastic.

Wfobfe: Well, for starters Google the Texas Game and Fish Commission and request their monthly Fresh Water Lakes report, or Salt Water locations. You will get a lot of information about each lake. It will come each month and answer a lot of your questions. Since you did not say where in Texas you are, request both. Just Sayin...RJS

Wfofe: The biggest blue cat I ever caught 26lb while drifting with frozen shad was on Cedar Creek Lake it is a good lake for all of the fish you are looking to catch

Actually I get a weekly fresh water and salt water report from "Texas Parks and Wild life" web site.

Been there done that
Some advice:
You have to pay to play.

Get good maps go to YouTube and relate their info to your body of water.

Depending on what you are fishing for again go to YouTube and search for advice.

Ask people at docks/boat ramps how did they do, where, with what.

Probably not easiest or cheapest is get a guide and ask questions.
As a novice I got skunked several times before producing. Could have saved a lot of time and gas.

Go to you nearby boat ramps and practice launching your boat.

And don’t give up!
Good luck!
