Ugly stik and a Penn 320 level wind, spooled up with 50 lb braid.
That’s what I use and it works fine for stripers, black fish, even fluke.

I fish on a party boat out of Galveston about 10 times a year Academy has a pen rival combo for $90. That's what I use and it's great for all fish. Even 20lb snapper. Look it up you can't go wrong

You will never go wrong with an Ugly Stick. I have an Ugly Stick / meat rod ( actually called a Tiger Shark ) with level wind. I also have another spinning reel set up that is great for trolling or bank fishing. I don't have any small or ultra light Ugly Sticks but all of them I have never had any problems what so ever.

I’ve got Ugly’s from ultra light to heavy boat rods. I love ‘em all.
