The "Old One" checking in.
Fished mostly Long Island Sound both boat and surf. Live presently in Jersey. Sold my "Flats" boat which I towed to Sarasota Bay for two months every year. Got too damn old so had to sell my beautiful pal. Now I toss top water plugs into the surf. Picked up and released a 20" Bass. Grabbed a Zara Spook. Old knees having trouble navigating the surf wash. Same old feeling of "wanting to go fishing". I'm going to throw a Sardine Yo-Zuri Mag Popper. It is about 30 years old. Last one. Don't make them any more. I know i'll lose it. Wonder how.

Welcome aboard eightpound. Keep after em if for no other reason than being alive and enjoying yourself!
Good luck, I am sure your sardine Yo-Zuri mag popper has at least one more fish before being lost.

Welcome to the Stage Eightpound. Good luck with the classic Mag Popper. If you add a 6"trace of wire, it might last longer. Just a thought. Tight Lines.
Alright, you officially qualify as an "old guy" on the Stage. Certainly not the oldest. But qualified for sure.
Thanks for your understanding "Spirit". Since I'll be "in the suds" I dug out my oldest rod. 35 years ago my son, who was a tournament Bass angler, helped me select a 7' St Croix which has had several guides replaced over the years of heavy use and many Bass and Blues released. Oh. And several hooks buried in various parts of the hands. Gonna use it with a 2000 Stradic.
Question. Been boat fishing since about 1978. Reefs in Western L.I. Sound and Flats in Florida. 20lb. leader in quiet water did the trick. Never used wire but a kind gentleman suggested a "6" trace" to avoid cutoffs. Should I use the commercial braided stuff with a swivel/snap? Would all that "noise" get lost in the surf tumult? Would the added weight of the wire alter the attitude of a jerk bait or popper? Your thoughts.

Keep on casting!
A day fishing doesn’t register against you in the book of life!
I'm of the opinion that you don't need any wire. 20 lb mono should be sufficient for most things you're gonna catch in the surf. But I suggest you try it for yourself and see what you think.
I'm a big fan of St. Croix rods. I own several. Mostly light stuff for trout.

I've had Bluefish bite through 40lb Triline Big Game, and swim off with a $15 Rapala in their mouth. That's why I suggested wire, especially on a irreplaceable popper.
I can't argue with that Fred. Those blues can be down right mean. But if the blues are biting I wouldn't throw a good lure out there, hell they'll hit a empty coke can.
Yep. The Chopper will engulf the Mag and swallow most of the leader. Caught only 1 Blue in the Jones Beach surf about 50 years ago on a 2oz. Tin. Two casts previous I beached a 25lb. Bass. Even at 37 it was a tough slog back to the car with those two beauties. Was using a Penn Squidder with a 10' Harnell blank that I fitted with guides and a Hickory "spring" butt. Damn. Long time ago.
Thanks to you fellas for your opinions. Input is always valuable.

Unfortunately when the Stripers are running, so are the Blues. I started using black coated braided wire leaders. I bought a roll, some duo lock snaps, and some small bbl swivels and made them 4"- 8" long, depending on the size of the lures. Shorter for the Tins and longer for Poppers and Swimmers. I used 20- 40 lb test, and they only last for a few fish, before they are all kinked and the black nylon is stripped off. We don't call them Choppers for nothing. They are a blast to catch though.
