Right now most people fishing are catching Chinook salmon unless they are going out to see. If they are going out to sea they could be catching tuna, salmon, or bottom fish and crabs.

Striped Bass are present in the Umpqua and Smith rivers the entire year. They are one of the hardest fighting fish in the river, but also one of the most difficult to locate and catch. Late March through May are considered the best months for catching stripers as they tend to school and feed heavily as they prepare to spawn. Casting or trolling with large plugs, plunking with a variety of baits or fishing live bait under a bobber are all techniques we use to catch the stripers. Our striped bass average between ten and 20 pounds with a chance at catching a fish weighing more than 30 pounds.

Thanks, jonlmac.

I fished the Umpqua and Smith rivers at night for many seasons in the 80's and 90's,
then the fishing fell off, and I haven't been back. Used to cast rebel plugs around the saw mill
area. Has this fishing come back? Thanks!

I don't know. The only way to find out would be to go and give it a try again.

Have any of you ever stripped flies for them?
I go back and forth between Flyfishing and gear.
Just fished the higher up on the Umpqua for small mouth . A lot of fun. You have to float tube the section that I go to .

Never have fished for stripers but definitely want to

I don't know. I was referring to the Smith river in southern Oregon near the Umpqua river.

The Smith River comes into the Umpqua river at Bolon Island near the mouth of the Umpqua. https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=smith+river+oregon&qpvt=smith+river+oregon&tsc=ImageHoverTitle&form=IGRE&first=1

Near Elkton. The fish were from 8” to 13”
Most of them were 11-12”
The largest I have ever caught was 19.5” , that was last year

I haven't fished it because it is kind of far to go, but I hear it's great for salmon and steelhead. I went out with a guide a couple of times on the Umpqua.
