Playing in the lake yesterday and couldn’t find any bluegills to keep so I decided to put the little guys on a hook and jug. Threw it off the boat and within a minute the jug started bobbing in the water. Made my way over to the jug and pulled on the line and I knew I had a good fish. Pulled it up to the surface and loan behold. Netted it and brought it in the boat. Within 10 seconds it was able to yank the hook out and I almost lost it over the edge of the boat. I just wanted to keep it in the boat long enough to take a pic. We don’t like to keep them because they help to control the booming bluegill and crappie population. If it would’ve been about 10” longer I may have considered it. But all I wanted was a pic to prove my story.
Yep, that's one reason to keep em in there.

That’s a beauty!…good catch!
Used to do that up in Quebec using perch. Sure was fun, but illegal I think. We we too young to care.
It depends on what state or province you’re in. I’m on a private lake and have no worries. In the south it’s legal. Not sure why it’s illegal. It’s the same concept as a tip up in the winter.
So with jugging you take a milk jug or large plastic bottle, 2 liter, tie a line to it with a weight and a larger hook. Catch some small bait fish and hook the fish to the hook and let it go. Wait for the jug to start bobbing or moving and check to see if there’s a fish on.
Good luck
How does that differ from using an ordinary bobber?
You don’t have it connected to a fishing pole and can do what ya want so long as you keep an eye on your jug. It’s a lot like using a tip-up while ice fishing.
