Qell Fred, it took me a while to find your post. Sounds like it wS an interesting trip. I do think your top water activity was Interesting. When I went back to fishing fresh water the first plugs I bought were a hula popper and a jitterbug. Thise old classics never die. Glad to see you had some fun.

Thanks Jim. It was interesting. It's been a while since I fished at night, and the first in a long time without the moon. This lake is mostly state park land so very few houses and sources of light. It will definitely be better on next month's moon.
The classics only become classics because they work.

Thanks JB. That was the first color I bought, maybe 50yrs.ago. I've lost and worn out a few over the years, but always have a couple in the box.

Nice catch FF.
I replaced the hooks on my hula popper. Had the originals on it. Looked like the had a zinc dip platting on them. Missed a couple fish and got rid of them, good upgrade.

I was thinking about doing the same thing Jwid. The only problem is many brand name hooks that size have a smaller eye, that doesn't fit well on the unusual Arbogast hook hangers.
And Thanks buddy.

Thanks for the report Fred!
Don’t forget—; an off day of fishing is better than a good day at work.
State parks are getting tougher. New York empties into western Ct Parks and we head east. LOL
I try to do everything off the weekends. Too crowded. Hotels are cheaper during the week too.
Old school Hula Popper? I guess everything older (including us) still has game!!

Thanks Mark. I was hoping if I got there before 5pm, I would beat the crowd. I failed to consider all the people who don't work, and were there all day. I won't make that mistake again. Love the old school classics, they still work.

Great report Fred fish... Great catch on the two umbrellas, that had to make you laugh hard...

Can't say that night fishing is better than early morning... Glad to know you did not surprise any of the local wildlife...

Thanks Dt. It reminds me of the old circus wagons, and yes I was laughing. I'm gonna hit it again next month during full moon week. Yeah walking back to get the truck with just my headlamp on, was a little tense, but no Wildlife except mosquitos.

As soon as I launched, I had to park about 3/8 of a mile away and walk back. I decided to stop at the first tree for haha's, and caught a 1lb skunk buster. Worked the shady sides of 2 islands with no success, waiting for the sun to go down. Tried a point I used to fish and got a second, 1.25 lb Largemouth still on a Dinger. After sunset I started throwing topwater, and missed 3 in a row on a Hula Popper and a Pop-R. Nothing on a Jitterbug,or a Whopper Plopper, so I went back to the Hula Popper and finally got one. Only 1.75 lb. but the best of the night. Fished another 45 minutes and decided to try and find the ramp, then walk back to my truck.
Learned something else, there's a flash for selfies too, that's why they look so bright. Who knew?

Great pics Fred, and no Skunk, sealed on the first spot. I don’t fish in the Dark, I have enough trouble when I can see where I’m stepping 😄

Thanks Ruff. I like to secure the striped critter ASAP. After that any more catching is the fun part. I have noticed that my night vision isn't what it used to be. Not ready to give up yet though.

Thanks Steve. They were good enough for the first night trip of the year. As always, looking for bigger ones.
