Monarch butterflies from the United States and Canada migrate to the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico during the winter.
On October 5th, the national weather service, normally tracking thunderstorm etc. was able to capture a mass insect migration over central Oklahoma. That yellow line isn’t rain, it’s the monarch butterfly migration being carried by a north wind behind a cold front. The parts of the line which are red are the highest concentration of butterflies.
How cool is that?
While on a trip to the west coast, we ran into them in California. It was like the Biblical Locusts arrival. They were everywhere.
My son-in-law and I were on a fishing trip a few years back and we ran into a swarm of them. It's something to see.

I witnessed thousands of them while duck hunting a few years back. It was cool.
Nature. Got to wonder in Awl. If we all could only take care of our part. Think before you throw that out the window folks.
Plant milkweed. Plant flowers nearby. The monarch population has undergone a catastrophic decline.
Yeah milkweed. Don't they lay their eggs on that? I don't think they eat it. I know they need it for something.
Milkweed is the only place where they will lay eggs. It is the only plant the caterpillar will eat.
I remember back in the 1980’s, there was a year that we had millions and millions of Monarchs here in north east Ohio. That was amazing and sticks in my head.
As kids we would search for caterpillars and put them in an aquarium. We fed them and watched them build chrysalis then turn into butterflies.
We need to do as much as we can to help them through this tough time. Plant And preserve milkweed and talk to others about them.

Thanks that's great stuff. I fished at Hen Island in Lake Erie and every year they'ed stop there and coat the whole place. Often wings touching. Beautiful!
