When everyone catches crappie do you put your thumb in its mouth to take it off of the hook??

I always just kept a towel handy. With "paper-mouths", or bluegills, sunfish, it's just more practical, and you don't get poked. Besides, getting the hook out is easier, imo..... there's just not that much space....hate to hook your thumb on the way out.

Having said that, I have never caught any 2-4lb behemoths like those that you guys have posted.... can't say that I have ever even seen a crappie over 12"-13", so using your thumb is entirely possible with those, I suppose, IDK.

For large ones, you can lip them ,for smaller fish, I just grab them lightly around the middle like with a Bluegill.

I usually just hold fhem around the middle unless they are very large and then you can lip them.
