I believe bass have a 18 minute memory on the same lure. I usually leave for 1/2 hour and go back with the same lure. Hopefully she has not moved. You can always change to a different bait and cast in the same area. Yes, the larger female bass are smarter than the dink male bass. That is why they are so hard to catch. They did not get that size being dumb.

Really can't answer that question--most never get released.

I caught a brown trout, the smartest of the trout family, on the very next cast, with the same fly, I caught him again. He didn't even make it back to the spot where I caught him the first time. I know that it was the same trout because he had a scar from a hook on his lip, probably from me catching him a month ago. I also caught a slime dog, the dumbest of all fish, I took it off the hook by just shaking the lure and it ripped his jaw a little. I wasn't going to put it in the boat or touch it. I threw the same lure back in and he hit it again. This time closer to the boat. This time I grabbed it with a gloved hand, I didn't want that smell on my hand, and threw it as hard as I could to the back of me. Then I thought, can I catch it the third time, so, I tossed the same lure over to where I threw the slime dog, and sure enough, bang, he did it again. Tell me how smart fish are. I have no idea how smart fish are or how their brain functions. I do know their memory isn't much better than mine.
I caught a brown trout, the smartest of the trout ... (show quote)

Anything that will try to eat something that looks like nothing in the lake and has shining doo-das and hooks hanging on it can't be all that bright. Then again I have fish for hours on the bank in the hot sun in the same spot and same bait and have caught nothing, so maybe I am about as smart as the fish.

You are likely right. Just like the rest of us. You bit on that shiny thing with hooks hanging off it, when it was hanging on the store shelf.

Reminds me of a quote by William Faulkner: any man who pits his wits against a fish and loses has it coming.

Actually that quote was attributed to John Steinbeck, not William Faulkner! Apologies to all.

Yes. I wanted to correct my statement before the righteous wrath of my California brethren was visited upon me
