Gotta love it when someone from the state that started the whole mussel invasion resulting in the 1996 Aquatic Invasion Act puts down another State for trying to not let it happen in their water. Nuff said.

OBG sorry you had a bad experience at Lake Perris. I to fish the surrounding lakes in Riverside county. Perris, Skinner, Diamond as well a few in San Diego county. The mussel stickers are nothing new and paid once a year along with our yearly registration fee through DMV. Now it appears that stickers are good for two years. No brainer or surprise that the state found a way to tax us in the name of mussels control. I’m aware of the harm these mussels can do if they get into are water systems. So the $16 comes out of my beer funds.

But come on. Their are lakes known to be infested (Lake Skinner) and lakes that claim they are mussel free (Perris, Diamond). If you are launching in a clean lake you have to show that you not transporting the possibility of mussels. The opposite applies when you exit some of these infested lakes. Lake Skinner is infested and requires that you decontaminate before you leave and get a agent at the lake to sign off on the form they filled out on you when you entered. There are signs at the entrance warning that it’s a felony to transport mussels (i.e not decontaminating thus not getting signed off)

Imagine the angler who fished Skinner not decontaminating, not getting signed off going home and pulling the bilge plug. Where does the water drainage go?

If you fish Skinner you know it has mussels you can see them all over the lake. So I wash down the hull clean my live wells and wait in the hot sun for a agent to sign me off (the form has all my info) cause I don’t want to find out about the consequences for non compliance.

So when I launch at Skinner I know I locked into Skinner for awhile or go through the mandatory waiting period between infested vs non-infested lakes.

So if you’re shocked about lake Perris don’t even think about launching at Diamond Valley. I’ve personally seen angler getting turned away for having a wet hull. The guy explained that his boat hadn’t been in any waters for weeks and only gotten dew on it for waiting in line overnight. He didn’t fish that day. At least the re-enter tag is free at Perris whereas Diamond Valley charges a fee not to mention the overall cost to fish Diamond.

1. Mussels fee is for the state
2. Mussels inspections controlled by body of water your fishing
3. Infested lakes vs non-infested lakes

Yes this sucks to hogs heaven and I don’t agree but look up the word “invasive”. Then go flush your toilet and pray that we don’t have to revisit the thoughts of outhouses for lack of water flow.

Thanks Tong. I was told this is new this year and that you have to purchase them separately. The normal process of registering your boat does not include it. Might want to check it out if you have some lakes that are sticklers on it.
Like I mentioned, no other lakes have turned me away or even mentioned that you need it.

Yes this is new this year must buy separately, more money for State.

Just wondering if the "mussel law" is applicable to row fishing kayaks (non-motored) that are not required to be registered by/with the DMV. Trying to avoid as much bureaucratic red tape hassles where possible. Appreciate any relevant info. on this subject!

ALL BOATS.

Is your boat a row - non-motored kayak which is not required to be registered by Cal DMV?

My Son who lives in Cal, told me about this years ago. They don't want you to bring the invasive species to a lake and contaminate it. Doesn't make sense doing it on line because the boat has to be inspected and can't do that on line. I think once you get it for a particular lake then could come back to same lake with out further inspections. If you have gone to a different lake then have to be inspected again. I am sure someone has the correct info to tell us. I know last year WA state fisheries nabbed several boats that were infected. They even have dogs trained to smell out the invasive muscles species just like drug dogs are trained. All for our good. Some of these species brought over from other countries do harm to pumps and kill off our good species.

Either way, they depend on you to be honest about where the last place you put in. At the Meet & Greet in NorCal, I had to get one before getting on Clear Lake. The campsite saw the boat and told me about it. They inspect at the launch ramp, you only get stopped if you don't have one.

Like D Tong said above, it's been in place for many years, and yes DD, I guess if a Mussel sees the Sticker ,they won't hang on ! What a joke ! OBG the way it works is the fee is used for inspection of Vessels and eradication of Zebra Mussels , if you only put your Boat in Ocean Waters you don't need a sticker, still sucks , I went to San Luis Resorvoir with my friend in his boat a few years back, he had washed the boat, nite before at home ,got it packed and ready ,put the bilge plug in at home, when got inspected by the ramp, we were turned down because, about a cup of water came out when ranger pulled the plug ,,,2 1/2 hour drive 1 way , ridiculous😠😡
Like D Tong said above, it's been in place for man... (show quote)

Good reason to drive around with the plug out and put it in at the ramp huh?

That can lead to bigger problems than no sticker
