I’m looking for a new Bass rod for lake fishing…Long story short I lost my 2nd very large Bass over the weekend and I got to see I think is the issue. I got him up to the boat and the hook was just stuck in the bottom of his mouth but not penetrated threw the barb. Bad hook set..Yes he shook and down he went. Looked to be about 6 to 8 lbs. After crying last night about it I got to reading some articles about poles and I’m using the wrong pole.. (yes the hook is very sharp) So looks like I need a med/heavy fast or extra fast pole so I can get some power to set the hook better.

If I’m on the right track can someone here suggest a pole that’s better and wont put me in the poor house? I’m looking to spend around $100 or so if possible as I see a lot of poles for upwards of $400+

Thanks Guys

Baretta,
There are a slew of choices out there in your price range.... I fish a couple of production Falcons (about 80 bucks) at Academy sports.... I like the 7ft heavy casting for worm and jig fishing, paired with a Lew's reel....The rods are light, sensitive, and won't break the bank.... I fish 15lb mono with worms and 20lb braid and 15lb leader for jigs... I have several rods of different makes, and many times I pick up the Falcon over some much more expensive makes.... Just my 2 cents worth.

Well, let’s see. What bait are you using ? A lure ? Live bait ? Since I don’t think live bait is very sporting and don’t use it, I can’t help you in that dept. Now lures are a different matter. If you are using crankbaits for bass , and you have the possibility of catching one like you mentioned , I would recommend at least a medium - heavy moderate fast rod w / 12- 14 fluorocarbon line . At least 7 ft long . If you are worm fishing , I recommend a medium - heavy fast action rod , at least 7’ long . Flourocarbon line 12-18 # . I would avoid x- fast rods unless you are throwing a hvy weight or just barely throwing the lure . X- fast rods have a tendency to rebound faster and can limit your casting distance , but they allow a quicker hook set than a fast or moderate fast due to faster loading up the length of the rod. Swimbait or spinnerbait rod would be same as worm rod, topwater lure rod would be same as crankbait rod, but with either 40# braid or 15# mono , as both of these lines float. Personal choice would be braid. You can get a suitable rod for 100$ . Unfortunately it will most likely be Chinese made. If you are able to , get the best rod your finances allow. You may find a decent priced American made rod on - line that’s just what you want.

St Croix mojo bass goes for under 150, is well constructed and it ain't made in china. Although the Mojo is not made in US, it is made in Mexico under direct supervision by St. Croix Wisconsin. I own about a half dozen St. Croix's, and I wouldn't trade a one of them. I have a Triumph (also made in Mexico) that I've owned for over 20 years that performs as well as it did the day I bought. I also own an Avid - one of my favorites. And couple of Premiers and Trout and Panfish Series. I'll stand behind any one of them. If I were a bass fisherman, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Mojo.

I agree with Spirit, the St. Croix Mojo Bass is a great choice in that range and in spinning reels the Shimano Sedona is a nice match. Good Luck!

Spirit,
You're absolutely right, if He's willing to bump his budget just a tad the Mojo series would be a good choice.... I would still look at pairing it with a Lew's in bait casting or a President if he prefers a spinning outfit. I have several Lew's bait casters in various grades, and can't complain about any of them, and I have fished President spinning reels for years with good service out of every one I have owned.... Just my humble observations and opinion....
(of course with the huge amount of different rods and reels out there, you will be able to find all kinds of opinions, with none of them being necessarily wrong. Everybody has their own likes and preferences).

Love mine. Had it several years. Bait caster. Also have a spinner. The other 20 are a mixed bag. Love my Ducket bait caster also.

I like the Veritas sold at most stores for around $100. Medium heavy is good all around.

I have several Bass Poles with quality level winds some have never been in water some have been used but, they are in very good condition, loaded with braided line. I am Bibiano @ dbv4u@aol.com. If you're interested I can take photos and post, the gear has been stored in a temperature controlled storage.
