Making a trip to dale hallow . Never been there before. Will be mostly bouncing shiners off the bottom for small mouth. Brother inlaw mentions maybe tossing some 6xds or dt20s . In My lake12 feet is deep ,never fished 20 . Most of my reels are high speed. 7:1 or 8:1 . Do I need a 5:4 to pull the deep divers. Also medium heavy rod would work alright?

MH ought to work just fine.
Personally, I prefer as fast a reel as I can get for deep cranking, because you've got to really burn it to get it down there where it's working. Deep divers are pretty inefficient lures by virtue of how little time during the cast is spent at your target depth.
Anything you can do to minimize the amount of time it takes to get it there, the better off you are.
I said all that to say I'd use the 8:1 reel.

I agree on the rod but I use a 5:4:1 reel for deep cranks. It allows more pulling torque and lets you remain in better control of the crankbait. Fishing an 8:1 on a deep diver all day must absolutely destroy your fore arms man.
The fishing line is really something you should pay attention to. The right or wrong line will effect how quickly and how deep your lure gets. Most people I know use 8-10lb mono. It’ll let you get the max depth from the lure and you can cast it further. You definitely want to cast your crankbait as far as possible. Gives more time on bottom.

I really only fish square bill crank baits around here at my home lake. 12 foot for me is deep around here . 5 to 8 foot with a kvd 2.5 is about my max. I'm going to a deep water lake where fishing 20 foot is normal this time of year. Have never had the need to fish a dt20 .

To get those baits down deep use quickly jerks like fishing a jerk bait. When the lure is down as deep as possible slow down. A slower retrieve reel works better, and it won't wear you down as fast. Those baits have a lot of pressure and you've got to hold on. All day fishing equals tired forearms. DEEJAY
LOL! The one comment about one arm resembles POPEYES and the other would be normal reminds me of a joke. It involves someone who spends a lot of time putting his bait on expertly by himself. So with his one arm he could crush a volkswagon but yet with the other he couldnt undo his fly....
The deep divers usually are anywhere from 3/4oz to 1 1/4oz. So you take a 7'6" rod and you can launch it a country mile. The farther you launch the longer your lure is at the designated depth. These are not designed to be retrieved at fast speed. Can't imagine using a reel other than 5:7, etc. if you intend to catch a fish using a deep diver. I fish the deep canyons in CA fairly successfully.
Any crankbait that dives deeper than 10' use the 5:4 or no more than 5:7
